EBC and Gokyo

Hi everyone,

I am starting EBC trek on Sept 27th. Below is my tentative itinerary. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. What is the likely hood of Cho La Pass being open and accessible in early Oct?

Sept 26 - Arrive in Kathmandu
Sept 27 - Fly to Lukla. Hire a porter and trek to Monjo
Sept 28 - Monjo to Namche Bazaar
Sept 29 - Acclimatisation at Namche Bazaar. Side trip to sherpa villages of Khumbu, Khumjung, Hotel Everest View and back to Namche Bazaar.
Sept 30 - Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
Oct 1 - Tengboche to Pheriche
Oct 2 - Acclimatisation at Pheriche. Side trip to Chhukung and back to Pheriche.
Oct 3 - Pheriche to Lobuche
Oct 4 - Lobuche to Gorak Shep. Side trip to Kala Pattar in late afternoon and back to Gorak Shep.
Oct 5 - Side trip to Everest Base Camp and back to Gorak Shep
Oct 6 - Gorak Shep to Dzonglha (On the way to Gokyo via Cho La Pass)
Oct 7 - Dzonglha to Gokyo.
Oct 8 - If possible, side trip to Gokyo Ri in early morning and continue to Khumjung
Oct 9 - Khumjung to Lukla
Oct 10 - Fly to Kathmandu

Thanks,
Manish

Hi Manish,
Tight, acclimatisation-wise. 3 nights @ namche especially if you dont spend a night at Lukla is a better plan. One more night at pangboche/pheriche/ dingboche is also preferable if spending 2 nights high @ Gorak Shep.
Check the AMS thread - most of the info is about ladakh but you cn get an idea of the rate of ascent
Gokyo-Gokyo Ri -khumjung is theoretically possible but it will be 12 hours. Your porter will rebell and i wouldnt blame him!
If you have high altitude trekking experience the itinerary is just about OK, i have done that speed myself but I consider myself lucky to have got away with it and I would not try that rate again. You are shaving it too close for my liking. This is really a 3 week trip. Try cutting out either Kala Pattar or Gokyo - it will be easier and you will enjoy it more.

have fun

Bruce
Dont know about the Cho La but there hasnt been much snow for the last few years so it is usually open
