Dzongri Gochela Trek In October-08

Hi..This is Sujoy from Kolkata.

I am planning to trek Dzongri- Gochela in this October. Exactly I am planning a long trek of 17-18 days. May be I will try to plan during 4th to 19th of October. I need some information for this trek. Previously I have done some High Altidude Treks and some of them were in severe cold so I am not worried abot the height or cold.

Please let me know:

1) We will prefer to go by our own.(our team members will not exceed 3 + 1 porter + 1 guide). Is there any boundings that we cant go at our own and we must go with some travel agent? In that case how do the travel agents charge?

2) Do we need to obtain any permission? If so from where?

3) What will be apprx cost of the trek for a team like us for this 17-18 days trek?(excluding the cost of equipment like tents etc but including the cost for a guide and a porter, food etc)

4) Will there be snow at that time? Is there any chance of snowfall?

5) What will be the difficulty level at that time if we want to trek upto gochela top?

Regards

Hi Sujay,

Co-incidentally I also planned this trek in October '08 starting on 4th to avail the puja holidays . No permission needed, October is the perfect month to trek in Sikkim, you can expect clear sky and snowy peaks. One thing I would like to suggest that you take one guide and one yak in-spite of porter. Yak carries lots of weight. No prob reaching upto Goechala in October.

Happy Trekking.

Hi Amlan,

You will need to pay National Park Entry Fee, Camping Fee, Camera Fee etc. General itinerary for Goechala is

Day1: Yaksom -> Tsoka
Day2: Tsoka -> Dzongri
Day3: Dzongri -> Thansing
Day4: Thansing -> Zemathang
Day5: Zemathang -> Goecha La -> Samiti
Day6: Samiti -> Kokchung
Day7: Kokchung -> Tsoka
Day8: Tsoka -> Yaksom

but camping in Samiti is not allowed now, if you don't get shelter in a trekker's hut then you have to think a alternative place.

by the way, in which month are you going??

Happy Trekking.

But if I can arrange an extended leave upto 19th I will like to enjoy the hole hiladay in this trek.At that case we may stay some extra days in some places we like enroute. may be we will be 3 friends. if you dont have any problem we can plan the trek with you.

Question

Hi Somnath,

Could you explain your point of view. As per maps and blogs Kokchung(Kokchurang) -> Phedang -> Tsoka (14 - 16 km approx) is doable! I'm attaching a map's thumbnail. Need your confirmation.

@Amlan
Normally one have to pay Entry Fee @ Rs.125/-, Camping Fee @ Rs. 25/- per day per tent and Rs.75/- for still camera.

@Sujay
The route that goes to Labdang is very scenic. Specially the Lam Pokhari lake and the impression of Kabru in its water is beautiful. But before going to that route, be sure that your guide knows that route well. Coz. that route is through a ridge having height near 4000 m. and water points are very few. The route is unconventional, it takes three days to reach Labdabg -

Day1: Kasturi Orar
Day2: Lam Pokhari
Day3: Labdang

From Labdang you can find jeeps to either Yaksom or Tashiding. From there you can get jeeps to Shilliguri.

I checked few website and came to know that thansing-labdang trek is not permitted. it is an one way route (????). Labding to thansing is permitted. Therefor if we want to go by that route we will have to start from labding.

Can anybody provide some information regarding this? If we have to start from labdang we will have to arrange porter, guide, food, utensils etc frm there. Is it possible? How is the trail? is it very difficult?

Had anybody done this trek by this route in October?

May be I am not able to recollect properly but there is a small but place call Kokchung between Sachen and Bakhim. There is a small shade just beside the bridge – a place for tent.
