You can only get to Joshimath by bus from Haridwar. I loved my stay there 10yrs ago on the way to Badrinath. Didn't do the VOF or Auli treks, but did do an alternative fairly easy (on the knees!) walk to Tapovan Temple & hotsprings (not to be confused with the other Tapovan nr Gangotri) We met a long term freak in Almora who told us about this place. We caught a share jeep to Tapovan Hotsprings then walked back along the very quiet road (only saw 2 or3 other jeeps in about 3hrs) & there were no other tourists, not even Indian ones anywhere to be seen. The scenery in this valley was absolutely stunning with the snow white peak of Nanda Devi peeping over the top of the other mountains.
So if you want a fairly easy off the tourist trail alternative, give this a try. KK |

The reason for no replies may be the fact that various aspects of trekking to the VoF have been discussed threadbare in several postings on this forum. I suggest that you search this forum for `valley of flowers' --- that will provide most of the information you want. At that point, more specific queries from you may elicit helpful responses.
