hiring trekking gear
2 of us are hoping to do sandakphu-phalut about 12th november: getting off the train at NJP, jeep to Dhorte and then start the trek from there on the following day.
1- can we hire a guide/porter in dhorte ? 2- can we hire a sleeping bag and down jacket from there also (if not, from Mana Bhanjang?). also: with a hat, gloves and thermal underwear will we be warm enough in mid november ? 3- are we best to get a jeep from NJP to Mana Bhanjang for the night but can we then get transport from to Dhorte in the morning ? 4- can i do this trek in trainers rather than hiking boots ? (i have trekked before in Nepal, Australia and New Zealand but my boots are dead and i don't really want to buy a new pair) 4- finally, is Gurding a nice place near the end of the trek ? assistance would be greatly appreciated ! |

Hi challengechappers......i think u have selected a really nice place to begin ur trek, Dhotre is better than Manebhangang and the trek to tonglu is really good from there. actually very few people starts the trek from there......
u can hire guide and porter from dhotre. No there is no place to hire sleeping bag or jackets in dhotre or in manabhangang . u can get them only in Darjeeling .u can try H.M.I. or other private agencies. i think a jacket or fleese will be needed. There will be no problem if u trek with ur trainers as the trek is very easy. i dont know about Gurdung but i think Phalut,Gorkhey,Samadin will be a much better option.try staying in samadin it is a really nice place.... Hope u enjoy ur trek an if u need more information pls let me know....

thanks cliffhanger, great info ! 10 minutes ago i read on the internet (good old google) that there was a forest fire in March around Gurdung, so your recommendation for Samadin is well timed ! food for thought. we shall probably have to go to darjeeling then for sleeping bag / down jacket rental as we don't want to carry this stuff around the rest of india (hope to go to varanasi overnight from NJP). also, as i see you are from kolkata - we arrive at 0115am at the airport, would you recommend staying there until sunrise or do the budget hotels have 24hour reception if we get a taxi around 2am? thanks again for your assistance. j

so
hello again. just 2 further queries....
1 - we may arrive in darjeeling on a Sunday. are tour operators/shops where we can hire gear or book jeeps etc (and, come to think of it, businesses in general in India) open on Sundays ? 2 - if we stay at samadin, can we make it back to darjeeling the following day (via rammam and rimbik) ? or will we need to stay at siri khola river hut/rimnik ? thanking you |

Hi
In Sandakphu, unless u have real bad luck, u can expect it to be clear & sunny in mid November. There will be no rain but there are chances of light snowfall. |
