| cooker fuel on airlines Am thinking of taking my trangia camping cooker on my next trip. I have done a search on here for info about fuel (it runs on methylated spirits) and it confirmed my fears that this is not so easy to find in india. So, my next question is, can i take meths in my checked-in luggage on an aeroplane? (not pressurised of course) |

| if you mean, those same spirits used in chemistry labs or the white camphor like stuff used in * hotels for heating buffet foods, you may get them. Frankly I don't know where. But it should be available if you dive inside a hotel and ask for their supplier.

As I`ve said before , I think it`s a good idea to bring some meths for preheating the burner (cleaner) and as a emergency backup. I´ve found meths in small hardware stores in for example Manali and McLeod without any major problems, once we managed to understand what I was talking about. The extra weight for a kerosene burner is quickly compensated by the higher energy content (almost the double) in kerosene. In reality the it is even more efficient as fuel consumtion ends the instant you turn the off the kerosene burner. In a meth burne you lose fuel while waiting for the burne to cool off, and when pouring back in to bottle etc. In the same way the extra weight for a trangia is also more efficient than the freestanding msr´s etc , because of elimination of wind loss and adding heat reflection, which also means lower fuel consumtion. | |

| unleaded petrol Coleman stoves will run on normal petrol (unleaded, RON 95). The alternative is have a specialized packing firm pack your fuel. It is then possible to take it on a plane, but will cost you a fortune. Stick with petrol. Hans

| The question is rather at what combination temperature/altitude it becomes tortuos. Before I had my Trangia Arctic, we used Trangia with meth burner on winter treks ; breakfast was typically made at temperatures around -15 to -20 C. Workable , with some coaxing, storing the burner close to the body in the anorak etc. The same gear came along to Nepal for my first Himalayan trek, highest point used was Thorung Pedi on the Annapurna Trail, around 4500, just below zero in the morning. When eventually this trusted companion gave out after some fifteen years of use, I used the meth burner as backup solution on my walkout out of Nubra. Still working a cold morning around 4700 - well, working well enough for tea and tsampa , cooking rice would require the patience of a boddhisatva. Long way to the answer : for normal trekking altitudes, outside the winter, with a limited diet it´s possible with meths - but it will be a right bloody pain in the ... |
