Communication with base camp

Hi everyone,

Is there anyway that communication over longer treks (30-40 kms) can be made ? Especially if there is a way to communicate with people at base camp, things could be a whole lot safer for trekkers. Simple walkie-talkies would not do, as these would not have the required range to reach base camp.

This came to my mind when fellow trekkers of mine had been to Roopkund a couple of weeks back. Near Chinnar Nag , beyond Bhagwabhasa, they came across another trekker who was almost unconscious on the trail due to exhaustion.

Anyone has any ideas ? I heard that for VHF we need government permission for its usage.

You could always take a satellite phone:

You know there really isn't, and I'm not so sure we really want one . . . Its one of the main reasons trekking solo is something I've seen people on this forum warned about numerous times. What would happen to the solitude and the distance from the world of instantaneous communication if say I had a chat with my mom on the pin parvati pass? Unthinkable.

If you don't want to take the risk stick to the trodden path is what I say!

Well, that was the first thing that came to my mind, but i am thinking of a cheaper and more viable option that can be used on a larger scale in India.

For those of you who have been on the longer organized treks, did your group have any way of communicating with the base camp ?
