The next Lap from Loharkhet to Munsiyari -- through Khaljuni village I did it later ..quite enjoyable ..and I Was not carrying a tent this time as well ..and it was quite apleasurable experince staying in villages . My Guide was good and had connections all along the way.

landoormama,

Thanks ... I too have heard about these off-beat treks ..... particularly from Loharkhet/Khati to Muniayari/Milam areas.

It should be interesting to do these off-beat treks ... particularly, if they go through villages, where one can get food and home-stay for a night. Are there clearly visible trails for such treks? Are they safe and walkable, like normal listed treks? Who was your guide?

landoormama !
Not many are out there who have done this trek in this way.
Your guide belongs to LOHARKHET ? I have hear this before from one guide name PREM.

ROOP KUND & KUARI PASS can be done without any much difficulty but your timing makes it very difficult and I may say NOT SAFE.

Better- if you choose POST MONSOON time. There are routes for MUNSIYARI and trail also goes through CAMP-1 of NANDA KHAT.
BABA of Pindari Glacier also knows this trail and I have seen some part of it when I reached up there.

LOHARKHET also have trail to reach out there and has become famous after Harish Kapadia did it.

I met one guide named PREM on the Milam Trek ... he is from Munsiyari though and pretty well known it seems ... I met him at Bugdiar twice! recently .... he was on way to Munsiari with feelfree82 on 16/may .... and then again on 23/May when he was on his way up to Milam, with a Canadian father and daughter client.... My Uttaranchal Guide-Porter, Debu, who has done many treks in these two routes, was suggesting a 15-day trek combining Rup-Kund and Kuari Pass as follows:

Day-00 Gwaldham - Wan by Share-Jeep
Day-01 Wan - Bedni Bugyal ........... 14Kms
Day-02 Bedni - AliBugyal - Bedni ....... 4Kms
Day-03 Bedni - Bughubasa ............... 10Kms
Day-04 Bhugubasa - RupKund - Bhugubasa... 10Kms
Day-05 Bhuugubasa - Bhujang TRC ......... 8Kms
Day-06 Bhujang TRC - Kunol Vill ........ 9Kms
Day-07 Kunaol Vill - Sutol ............ 12Kms
Day-08 Sutol - Ramni .................... 14Kms
Day-09 Ramni - ChetakTop - Jheeji ...... 13Kms
Day-10 Jheeji - Pana .................... 10Kms
Day-11 Pana - Dakwani ................... 14Kms
Day-12 Dakwani - KuaraiPass - Kachua .... 15Kms
Day-13 Kachua - Tapoban ................. 6Kms
Day-14 Tapoban - Joshimath (by jeep).....
Day-15 Extra buffer rest day to use as needed

The village names and distances may be approx ... they were provided by a local guide guy ..... so may not exactly match with standard trek guide-books.

Can this be done reasonably around 7th July 2007, despite monsoon rains? Has anybody done this or part of these treks?

Any ideas, suggestions, advise ...most welcome.

Thanks in advance
KS

Rup-Kund + Kuari Pass Combo

Hi,

Trying to revive this thread again .... as I am hoping I can do this trek in June 2008. Last year, I shelved this trek plan as many veteran trekkers on IM, advised against this trek in monsoons. I am hoping June 2008 will be a good time (after snow .... and before monsoon).

Any advise on trek route, schedule etc. (see my orginal post #1) in this thread .... and recent experiences on this trek-trail conditions will be welcome. Thanks in advance! .... KS

@ks bluechip

Perhaps late may- early June would be a better time for this trek,as weather conditions do get a little uncertain in late June.

btw a Bombay group - Savarkar Foundation in Shivaji Park are planning Roopkund treks in end April early May '08.

ksb saab,

The only thing useful I have to add is that u don't need to start your trip from Gwaldam, unless (a) u intend to approach thru Kumaon, or (b) u specifically want to go to Gwaldam for a visit and take in the views.
If u are approaching from Karnprayag and Tharali, u just keep on going straight to Deval, from where u can hop into a jeep bound for Wan. U'll get a jeep for Deval from Karnprayag or Simli; if there's a prob just go upto Narayanbagar or Tharali, from where u'll definitely get transport for Deval. Even small last-minute supplies are better picked up in Tharali - bigger bazar. Come to think of it, even the Deval bazar is bigger than Gwaldam's.
There's a GMVN at Deval, if it helps.

Maybe u don't need it, but I do have the contact of a guide in Gwaldam who I met by chance last year. He had accompanied NG's Roop Kund skeleton-mystery-tracing expedition some years back (yeah, THAT one from TV).

Hi Mr. Srinivas,

U can ask for details of Roopkund part to Arjun. If I'm not wrong he had done this trek in 2006.

Happy trekking.

Yes, thanks SSG. Yes, we have to sort of track the progress of the monsoon over the subcontinent, in may-june 2008 and then take call. But I guess any time say from 20th May to 20th June should be a good window. ... KS

Dilliwalla, thanks. Yae you are absolutely right ... in fact, I have once gone from Karnaprayag to Tharali to Debal directly by Jeep. And once trekked down from Gwaldam GNVN to Debal. And the Gwaldham GMVN is really a nice "calming" sort of place ... even though a bit run-down. I have stayed there twice.

Reg: Guide, yes I have my usual guy Debu (of Khati Village on Pindari route) ... but if you can give me the contact name/number/details of your man ... I would like to use him, in case Debu is unavailable for some reason. .... KS

Ok, sir, I'll look for his name/fone no. He's around 50-ish and very fit, must have taken dozens of expeditions over the years.

In fact, I met him at the only other accom option in Gwaldam, the brand new Nature's Treat Resort. I had gone to check it out, was staying at GMVN myself (July '07). Very nice, rooms from 400 to 800 bucks in season, they were giving them out for 300-400 then.
I believe roshe mentioned it in her article 'A trip to heaven'.

BTW, on those previous trips, where did u go from Deval?
