Chandratal

Hi,

The route to Chandratal is now jeepable all the way till the lake. Though its a awfully bad and narrow road and requires a expert driver to maneuver it.

Attaching few pics of the lake.

A bad news for the lake. pristine lakes such as Chandratal should be accessed by foot only.

Okay , Physically challanged tourists can be given permission, but not the fit but lazy ones, because this may damage the ecology of the lake.

You are very much right. we must keep something of nature intact as she is. This road is not welcomed considering the fragile ecosystem of the himalayas.

I agree with that but still I think the numbers going there are not very high as of now? We are planning to trek there in mid June and I am searching the forum for info as of now.

You can trek downwards from Kumzum Pass and then come back to Batal. That will be less exertional than the old Batal - Chandratal route. DO not forget to camp beside Chandratal for at least one night.

Bhaswaran, thanks for the info. What I am also looking at is getting back to Lahaul/Spiti after the trek to spend a few days. How should I go about it?

You can start again from Batal after coming back from Chandratal either way. If you want to go to Spiti, proceed to Kaza from Batal. Visit Ki monastry and Kibber village one day from Kaza and local sightseeing another day, then you can proceed to Tabo, and if you want, can go to Pin Valley.

If you have covered Spiti earlier, and then done Chandratal, proceed to Keylong from Batal, enjoy in and around Keylong next day, u can proceed to Jispa and Darcha or even Suraj Tal by car, the next day visit Udaypur and Triloknath, and then come back to Manali via Rohtang Pass the next day.

Enroute, do not forget to spend a little break at the beautiful village of Sissu, one of my favorite places.

regards,

Bhaswaran

Bhaswaran, once again thanks a lot and this would be our first time in Spiti. I am yet not sure what we want to do apart from 'one trek is must' moto. So I will hold on my queries and then start again.
