Possibly, though i would not rely on it.One of the trekking offices probably have it, though whether the thread is the same as Europe cannisters i dont know. Unless yoa are above the tree line you could just use wood, everyboy does.Have you decided which trek to do?Have a great time, i know you will.

Hiya CKC, hope youre well! Yeah im not having much joy finding out about the gas! My stove is a tiny folding thingy so ill take it anyway, but id imagine that apart from wood, the multi-fuel stoves would be the best bet but theyre not cheap...
Nah havent planned beyond: Dodital-Darwa Bugyal-Barsu then bus to Gangotri-Gomuhk-Tapovan and back, and then who knows? how is the descent from Darwa Bugyal to the main road up to Gangotri?
cheers mate

Just use wood, onthe first trek there are places to eat for most of it anyway ,ditto the second trek.I always take my meths stove, (the bottom of a coke can, weight 8 grams) but only normally for use in hotel rooms for my morning coffee and porridge.Though its always good to have on the trek in case of bad weather. Though if you are going this autumn you probably will not see a drop of rain.

Where would you buy meths for the alcohol stoves, I haven't seen it before in India? Trekkers Point in Delhi say they have the screw on cannisters: http://www.trekkerspoint.com/

I get my meths at a paint/hardware store in Uttarkashi.I am not sure if it is pure meths or some form of paint thinner, though it works fine. On reflection i have been offered gas in a trekking office there.I never use it so as i mentioned in an above post i dont know if it is the same thread as is in use in Europe.

interesting...yeah theres different types of gas cans some with thread, some without - these normally pop into a plastic case which has a metal valve on top which pierces the can when its inserted, and the stove part screws into this. thanks for the shop info leem, might b possible to go there before i get my train to haridwar
ckc, you mentioned porridge!!! is this - oats, as we know it in the uk - available in India?? and what other food do you take on treks?
cheers mate - i seriously appreciate all this valuable info!

Local food should not be a problem on most trek routes in India. Oats, instant noodles are available in most grocery stores. Sattu (a mix of gram flour and other pulses) is a powder and can be eaten by just adding water to form a dough. Add salt, green chilli and onions, and it can taste good too.Great nutritional value and easy to carry.
I was under the impression that the trek route beyond Gangotri requires special permission from the local administration. Is this correct?
MSR stoves are expensive but very useful.I have cooked proper meals for myself on some of my outdoor/camping trips.

Hiya!
Thanks for the food info, never heard of Sattu!
Yes, to the best of my knowledge, permit is required for Gomuhk-Tapoban, obtained from DFO in Uttarkashi. Some have got it in Gangotri itself but it seems this isnt 100% guaranteed. 150 permits issued per day, standard permit is 200IR for 2 days, additional days 150IR. Thats about as much as i know
Of course, hundereds of threads here about th trek; though as usual, much of the info is very old and they go very off topic very quickly!! This is helpful; tho more about about the route than permits, logistics etc...

Much thanks to Jyotipg for the wonderful post.
Cheers!

Hi CKC,
Can i pick your brains again? Could you tell me about the way from Dodital to Dayara Bugyal? It seems popular hiking up from the highway via Barsu and not from Dodital ... have you done Dodital - DB?
Many thanks!

The area you are talking about has been swept away under massive floods.

The access to dodital has been blocked completely.

More on this at following thread.

Hi,Neilus, as you can see there are problems in the area due to monsoon flooding. They normally have things up and running in a few days so by the time you get there it should be o.k.I have done Barsu to Dodital twice. You will need a guide. From Barsu to Dayara is fine but after that you would be in very thick jungle. To come from Dodital means that you would have to take a guide from Agoda as only a dhaba man and the priest from the temple live there. Also you would have to retrace your steps to Mangi cross the river(if the bridge is still there) and then start climbing through the afore mentioned jungle. Coming from Barsu you dont need the bridge as you would drop down to Agoda and then along to Dodital. The trek will take 3 or 4 days depending on how fit you are ,also its nice to chill out in Agoda or Dodital. You should be able to find a rough map on the net that will help explain the route.Do not attempt it without a guide. You might be able to get a guide from Barsu though i wouldnt bet on it ,espeically if you are there at harvest time. Personally i would get to Agoda, then go to Dodital(beautiful walk)stay the night then return to Agoda and arrange a guide to Barsu. The person to see is Rajeesh at the bharat tourist lodge. He is a great guy and will get you a good guide. C

hi
many thanks ckc, thats very helpful...sounds quite awkward to link the two places tho i could be lucky and find someone in agoda who could take me to dayara...
but the news from uttarkashi is very bad; sounds like it is this precise area that has been hit the hardest...and i seems wrong to worry about hiking routes when so many lives have been terribly affected; i just hope the rescue services can do a good job getting some assistance to the people in uttarakand...
thanks!

You will definately be able to get a guide to Dayara though you might as well just ask for a porter then they can carry your sack as well. When are you going?

hiya ckc! i fly out on 02/10 so hopefully things will have got back to some degree of normality, tho the pics/footage shows a lot of destruction very sad...
i think agoda-dodital and back should be fairly straight forward (famous last words!!) ... then agoda-dayara-barsu then hopefully on to gangotri. how long would agoda-dayara take, and what would a guide/porter cost roughly?
also, if you take a guide/porter, whats the sleeping arrangement? i really hope they take care of that; my tent is "2 man" but in reality its 1 man plus gear...not massively keen on snuggling up with a complete stranger...maybe thats just part of life on the trail ill have to get used to ...
many thanks again mate, appreciate the help massively!
