Camping Equipment in Delhi?
Avid Trekker has already helped with his comments on walking boots available in India these days.
Are the closed cell foam sleeping mats available in Delhi? Where would you find other camping/trekking equipment there? Thankyou. |

Yes, closed cell foam pads are available at delhi. Used to be rs 300 a coupla years ago. Should be cheaper now. Don't have the addresses on hand.... will post in a day or two (maybe three). Most other equipment is available.
What exactly are you looking for... apart from closed cell foam pads?

Thanks Avid,
I am also interested in light weight stoves. Are any of the butane gas cannisters available? For example, In Australia the french made blue ones are widely available, I think they azre called "camping gaz". I have also seen chinese made ones that are grey. I am really just trying to avoid bringing stuff like that from Aust if I can help it. My rucksack is really bulging with tent, sleeping mat, boots, stove etc. Normally the tent and mat would be strapped to the outside of the rucksack, but for air travel it all needs to go inside for the flight. I have been wondering what is available in Delhi these days. I am bringing a tent and my own boots, its great to know the sleeping mats are available as that will save me quite a bit of space for the trip over. Much appreciated. |

These two chaps advertise regularly in the Himalayan Journal brought out by "The Himalayan Club" (i am a member)(the club is more than a hundred years old). PLEASE NOTE i am not endorsing them or anything like that. They stock many well known foreign brands.... and most Indians (including yours truly) cannot afford the prices.
1. Chogo Ri (Hemant Sachdev is the owner & Preeti Mishra is the assistant) Delhi telephone numbers are : +91 11 2331 2783 and +91 11 2331 2787 2. Shraddha Outdoor (Ashish Sood is the owner) at Gurgaon (almost Delhi) Their telephone number is : + 91 124 256 1675. They can supply an entire mountaineering expedition is what they claim. If asked, say you got their address from the Himalayan Club. BUY ONLY KEROSENE BURNING stoves for India. MSR XGK is good. MSR Dragonfly has the "simmer" option.... but it works "not so good" above 12000 feet. The Lonely Planet Thorn Tree informed me that the Primus Himalaya Omnifuel from Sweden is apparently the BEST of the lot. These two guys both have MSR. Primus... i don't think so. |

I bought a high altitude tent from Ebay India. The seller is from Kolkata, but there is a shop in Kamla Nagar in Delhi, who are selling tents and a host of camping and trekking materials. Visit http://www.stikage.com
I bought sleeping mats and rain ponchos from Stikage |

Try Avi Industries in Mumbai. They have good gloves of leading brands like North Face. Not sure of the prices though. But you will require gloves which are waterpoof and with nylon or fiber coating on the exterior, while heavy fleece material inside the gloves. Check out their other camping and mountaineering materials. Highly experienced and can advice you the right option to buy.

I stumbled upon this thread searching for stores that stock camping equipment in Delhi. I went Chogo Ri's new offices today. They have moved to Mathura Road and do not seem be interested in selling to individuals. They said they outfit complete expeditions these days. They had one overstock backpack and a 20F sleeping bag. The pack was of a poor quality, and the Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag was rated 20F. I was (still am) looking for a 32F bag.
Looks like I will have to choose from the (very)limited stock at Adventure18. FWIW, I was told by the rep at Chogo Ri that Trekker's Point in Connaught Place sources it's stock from Adventure18. |

Hi,
I bought my trekking stuff from Adventure 18 near Venky college, motibag and adventure point, CP. A18 keeps quality products like boots, ropes etc. and adventure point keeps quality products on camping like sleeping bags, tents, Coleman camping products and all. |

Yesterday I visited a sport center in Spain try to find a better kerosene stove. They sell also MRS brand. As I could read in the instruction of use they also may have problems with soot formation. Anyway, thank you very much for your information. I appreciate it very much. |

There are many trekking gear shops and factories in delhi.
I prefer going to Carabin which is in Okhla industrial area (South Delhi). Carabin has almost every thing and that too at very low price. They have imported stuff as well as self manufactured one also. I bought one rucksack (65 L) from them which was very basicand it costed me some 900 Rs. For stove there is a showroom in CP which sells a good multifuel stove which is way costly in Indian terms. I bought one stove from old delhi which was old style but very effective with kerosene (It was made up of yellow metal Petal). |

To minimise soot , preheat the burner with meths or any other pure form of alcohol.
