You'll need to catch a bus from Haridwar to Rishikesh, then switch to another bus for Uttarkashi. Haridwar to Rishikesh was only half an hour or so, I believe, but Rishikesh to Uttarkashi is 8 - 8.5 hours, depending on whether the driver needs to stop to beat a passenger.

You could also try to get a ride in a Jeep. It'd probably be marginally faster but no more comfortable, if at all.

Thank you very much for your advice. It will be very helpful.Iam trying to walk daily atleast 1 hr.In which I can coverOnly 6-6.5 km without carrying any load. But I will increase the speed slowly. Is any thing else any exersize which is needed to practice to increase the skill or capacity of rock climbing.Because I dont have any formal training on rock climbing.Besides that i want to read something about equipments used in mountaineering.
can you tell me any book related to that.

ani rch you don't need to do any special exercise ..just try to increase your stamina, breathing control during long walks ,muscle toughening exercise ( esp for finger holds during rock climbing) & you don't need any formal training as this is basic course... they will teach you everything from scratch... Don't worry ..you will be fine ...there are three main aspects on which your performance during this course will be evaluated... Rock Climbing/Bouldering , Snowcraft , Icecraft...& securing good marks in theory paper will be additional advantage ..your rope instructor will observe closely while you performing these activities & depending on that you will get grade . As for reading concern I don't know any book but these links will prove useful

Congrats ! Finally you got the confirmation ....
Regarding reaching Uttarkashi : ...in addition to info provided by beklemmung.. make sure you reach Rishikesh before 12 - 1 pm as hardly any buses/jeeps ply between this route thereafter.

Hi All,
I am planning to do the basic course in Sept'08. I just downloaded the forms. the medical check up form is really comprehensive. I want to know if all of that is mandatory and to be done by a Govt. doctor?
Also wondering if I will miss the snow in Sept-Oct
Thanks,
Mallik

Yes filling all details in medical check-up form is mandatory & details must be filled by certified medical practitioner/ Govt. doctor .
Yes there will be less snow in sep-oct compared to march-april batches but they will set up base-camp further ahead (& higher than)of march-april batches ...so no need to worry ..you will get snow at higher heights.

just want to make sure if my family physician's report (MBBS doctor) will be sufficient? what did you do? want to get it fast and no time (actually don't want to) to go to Govt hospital.
Thanks

MBBS doctor's report with reg. no. mentioned on form will be sufficient ..but keep in mind - Submitting this medical certificate means you've already gone all the medical tests mentioned in the form ...so make sure you're 100% fit before going to course .
(off the record - I also did the same thing )

anandd - I have deleted your email address - it is not a good idea to post it on an open public forum to invite spamming etc. After 10 posts and 15 days membership you will be able to PM yourself.

Dear Ani
I think you are on the right track
For rock climbing, as for all other BMC activities, you will need lots of flexibility. Regular stretching of all muscle groups is a must. you can also go in for wrist, ankle and shoulder rotations and finger flexing for rockclimbing.swapnil is right about the finger holds!
try to loosen up your body, esp your ankles for the course.
try out sit ups also you can start with 2/3 sets of ten, then work your way up.
i hope this helps u.....
best luck!

ps. the shoes are really important.... buy them as early as possible and break them in... get used to walking in them..and running in them. if you are not planning to invest in some inter national brand then the 'hunter' shoes are really good! just make sure they have rubber soles not pvc.
