We used to, in Dalhousie, have a leopard coming and sleeping in our porch at night every few days. A sight it was from my bedroom window. But there is another element to all this. Mountains are personal. I have spent a week in the Swiss alps- that were breathtakingly beautiful, but they were not my mountains.
PS: Just read that part about Chaukori. My last trip a couple of months ago stopped at Binsar (had only four days), though I was planning to go further to smell Chaukori. Damn. Really pissed if it is as bad as you say. But Kumaon is going fast- everybody and his mother in law is buying property there from across North India, for a start.

True, Choukori is over-developed now.
Capt, do you still have that family home in Dalhousie? And you did Binsar recently
... did you take your missus along? Did you carry enough sweaters and shawls?

No. Disastrously, it was sold when my grandfather got too old to look after it (he used to spend 3/4months a year there)- and his kids didn't want to do so. I was at sea, it was fait accompli by the time I returned. Damn.
Beautiful house, huge. Two storied, all wooden including floors, maybe five bedrooms, a large open area around it, nearest neighbours maybe two kilometers (you had to walk half a kilometer just to hit the road)- this was Upper Bakrota, an extremely quiet area then. And the walks- including longish treks to Chamba and Khajiar- were out of this world.
No missus at Binsar. Me was on work that side so escaped for a few days- with a windcheater, it was coldish
. Work thought I was in Delhi

Nope. And easily trekkable- I think I was maybe six when I did that Chamba/Khajiar thing, and my sister was even younger.
I didn't inherit it, but I inherited something better- and ontopic- a love for the mountains

I never had Dehradun as my location (Oh how good that would have been
). Delhi has been my home from birth. I did my third grade from Dehradun and since then have gone there zillions of times. Have witnessed snowfall in Rajpur in those days which has never occurred since then and by the way things are proceeding, probably never will. Sometimes, the joy that the Daybreak brings, is unparalleled!

Wow!!.. thats would have been an amazing place. I would take an immediate retirement if I find such a place to live. Captain, please find if the current house owner is willing to sell it. I may sell my apartment in bangalore and buy your ancestral house..

Yeah, been there once, that was enough. They're tame compared to Hims, in every way.

It is that bad. And here's the funny part (along laugh-not-weep lines) - all of them are illegal (except KMVN). All of Chaukori land is for agricultural purposes only, that too chai bagan (since British times). But that's not stopping the multiple owners from selling it off - on a stamp paper.

In HP?
Surely you don't mean that one?

Then I have you mixed up with someone else.

Now that I didn't know of! You're right, no chance of it any more, ever. Even snow in Muss is highly erratic/sparse now , as I'm sure you know.

No idea. Maybe I should go back (not been for fifteen years or so)- but they probably have a MacDonald's there now
- or worse, an apartment block.
