Beginner trekking routes for October

Gurus,

I need some advice in selecting a trekking destination for October. My requirements/wishes/conditions are as follows. I tried searching IM, but could lock on to something yet. Please share your thoughts.. I will followup with more questions

1) Can spend 5 days from base stations to base station
2) Haven't done any trekking so far, other than some walks at high altitude in Lachen (sikkim)
3) Reasonably fit. Can walk 7 km/hr for 30 mins
4) Want to see/walk over ice
5) Want to see green landscape/meadows
6) Not ready to take life threatening paths/trails
7) Preference is uttarakhand / Himachal / Sikkim.

best regards
Swaroop

Trekking Places and Itineraries

The link above can give you various options. October gets cold in Himachal so if you cannot handle cold well, try Uttarakhand. I always suggest Beas Kund as the first trek for a beginner - typically you will see snow and may even experience snowfall in October.

Naggar-Chanderkhani Pass-Malana-Jari-Manikarn is another option

Great writeup Rajat.. It is too much to consume. :-)

I read the travelog on Beas Kund trekking. It lovely, but am ok for trying out next level (easy2 or mod1), if it substantially enhance my experience. Snow and green are my preference. I know its contradicting, but want to checkout whether such trails exists in Oct ?..

Swaroop - go for Roopkund you will get both. Infact I am likely going there Sept end with a large group. The advantages:

1. While it is a 5000m trek, it is a popular route so easier and cheaper than ones not done often.
2. Very green bugyals (Ali and Bedni) enroute, though they start becoming dry in October.
3. Takes 5-6 days starting Loharjung and ending Wan (can be done in 4 days but risky on account of AMS), kilometers aren't much - though climb is huge.
4. Snow at or beyond Bhagubassa (4300m).
5. It is a return trek so you can go as far as you want to and not necessarily complete it.

I am also now thinking about Roopkund. Also preponing my trip to Sept end.

Does it normally rain during sept end ?. Or any chance of landslides ?. I will PM you for group details.

Swaroop - no guarantees of weather in Himalayas but in terms of planning this is a safe period, rest is luck factor.

A kindred soul

Hi Swaroop I too am in exactly the same situation as yours and was wondering if u would like to discuss probable locations for the trek. Since i have got leave only in late Oct I had to dump Himachal bcoz of weather. I am now looking at Chopta Chandrasila trek, Tapovan trek and Kuari pass trek, hoping of course that weather is favourable.
Have u got an eye on someplace nice?? Please share in case u do

PS- I too feel that I can do better than the Beas Kund trek, lovely though it is.

time constraints prevent me from going as far as Sikkim unfortunately.
I talked to some people and I am considering Pindari besides Kuari Pass and Doditaal-bugyaal.
