You are moving on to the pass which offers one of the best scenes of the Himalaya. Go ahead without worry and enjoy.

Forgewell, how long are you going to be there? I have trekked through Kuari Pass but we exited in Dhuni. I am just wondering if Tapovan is slightly shorter?

its an amazing trek !!! i did the same and exited at tapovan ... it took us 3 days ... i was going on an organized trek as well at first but as i reached joshimath i found out that the local agencies charge MUCH less ... it took me half a day to get things organized at joshimath for the trek ... they have a package for the trek , but i rented the gear at individual rent basis and the whole thing , including sleeping bags , porters tents food stove etc. cost us about rs 3500 (total) for the 3 days (included 2 nights ) i went through the himalayan snow runner ... indians have to take a cheap permit for like 60 rs. (roughly ) and its about 200rs. for foreigners ... (PER DAY )
i had an AMAZING time there ... hooked up with three foreigners and we all split the costs ... i would suggest u to do something like this unless its costing u less with that organized tour ... have fun happy traveling PS : dont waste ur time and money on taking the cablecar to get to auli from joshimath ... u will get MUCH MUCH better views in the trek itself ... its 400 rs. for one person ...( just my opinion from my own experience ) |

Trips to Haven, thanks I thought that Kuari pass base the guide pointed out that if we really needed to exit in a hurry there is Tapovan below. Yes, the views are amazing on the trek.

Hi....an associated question...
We are planning to do the Roopkund-Homkund trek and come out from Ghat to Tapovan through Kuari Pass. We'll be trekking sometime in mid-June. Is the stretch from Ghat to Tapovan via Kuari Pass do-able without a guide? Or is there a possibility of getting lost? |

Forgewell, we paid around 10,000 rupees for two to trek. But then this could be the Indian rate and we had our own tent, sleeping bags and some food stuff too. I mean trekking tend to charge foreigners a little more.
For the route I am pretty sure we could not have been able to do it without a guide. If you are thinking of well marked trails, there are not. I can recommend Sohan Singh Bisht (our guide for the trip) as a guide and if you wish I can give his contact details. |

Tapovan to Kuari Pass
Hi
I am a regular trekker (for over 14 years). Am planning Tapoban to Kuari pass and back (that is Tapoban) between Sep 20th and 29th. My wife, (first time trekker is accompanying me.Few questions 1. Is Kuari pass open till end of September? 2. will Tapoban to Kuari pass in 2 days be very strenuous. How is the terrain? Or should i do the ascent from Auli via Gorson and then do the return path via Tapoban? 3. Are there villages/guesthouses between Gorson and Kuari Pass and between Kuari Pass and Tapoban? Or do we have to take tents and cooking equipment? 4. Pls advise Last edited by Dilliwala : Nov 16th, 2008 at 00:35. Reason: merged thread |

Yes, I went to Kuari Pass at the end of October last. The pass is open until the beginning of November.

Instead, I suggest that you start from Auli and come down through Tapovan. That way, you'd also be able to spend some time in the enchanted surroundings of Gorson Bugiyal. Here is one possible schedule: Day 1: Joshimath (1890m, 6201 ft) - 16 km road - Auli GMVN (2519m, 8264 ft) - 4 km - Gorson Bugiyal (3658m, 12001 ft) Day 2: Gorson Bugiyal - 8 km - Chitrakantha (3506m, 11503 ft) Day 3: Chitrakantha - 10 km - Gailgarh (3658m, 12001 ft) Day 4: Gailgarh - 5 km - Kuari Pass (4268m, 14003 ft) - 7 km - Khullara Day 5: Khullara - 16 km - Tapovan (1829m, 6001 ft) - 15 km road - Joshimath Of course, I don't know your time and other constraints, so YMMV. There is some more information in the GMVN map of the trek. Quote:
