Auli to Kuari pass with kids
Auli to Kuari pass with kids
We are two adults and two 8-year old children planning to trek in Garhwal during the 2nd week of May. We are keen to do the Auli to Kuari pass trek (via Gorson, Tali, Gailgarh and return to Auli).
I would like to know specifically if this is a safe route to do with kids. I have been reading about narrow, treacherous paths on some sections. I am concerned about this, especially in case it rains. They will be game to do tough hikes but I don't want to put the kids through anything too nerve-racking or dangerous.
Any thoughts?
We will probably do an organized camping trek via GMVN. Has anyone experience with them and was it positive?

As much I heard about Kuari Pass - it is definitely doable with kids. Don't worry about treacherous sections. Your guide/porters will help you and your kids to manage it out. I am sure you and your kids will do well in this trail.
Once you are on the trail, these worries will not surface out. I also trek with my daughter and she is turning 9 this year.
You must do this !

Hello,
I am planning to do a version of the Kuari pass trek too with my family (wife and 6 year old son). I am having the same doubts if it would be too dangerous and demanding to put my son through this. The following is what I plan to do of course with a proper guide and all other support.
Day1, Take Cable Car to Auli, Trek to Gorson and camp there for the night, Expected Distance 4 KM, Expected Duration 1-2 hr
Day2 Gorson to Tali, Expected Distance 10 KM, Expected Duration < 5 hrs
Day3 Tali To Khulara, Expected Distance 9 KM, Expected Duration < 5 hrs
Day4 Rest at Khulara, optionally hike to Khulara top
Day5 Khulara to Dhak or Tapovan whatever is easier, Expected Distance 12 KM, Expected Duration 6 hrs ?
Please feel to correct me as the above has been deduced from blogs and not from maps.
I want to give the actually Kuari pass a skip.
The following are my concerns and queries, it would be great to hear some feedback.
1) Is it too risky or ambitious to try this with a 6 year old?
2) I plan to do this during the last week of May, the first day of trek being May 26th. Should I be expecting to encounter snow along the way? I guess I should be prepared for some heavy rain/hailstorms in the afternoons.
3) A blog on the trek seems to talk about a section (2 KM or so) between Gorson and Tali being treacherous, with a cliff on one side and a vertical drop of about 1 KM or more on the other, and the path itself being just 1 feet wide. This confuses me a little if the path was as risky as it sounds I would have expected people to be properly roped up before negotiating this stretch. But nobody talks of ropes being used in the blogs.
4) I am on the look out for a good guide, and unfortunately Sonu is not free on these dates.
Raduday,
Since u do it earlier, it would be great if I could learn from your experience, and I wish u the very best for your trip.
Thanks,
Vikram

well may and june is the best time to trek kuaripas, but as my recomendation from Gorson to Tali there is problem at two curves. either you have to take a extra guide who can be with the kids as well very good experience guide.
one of my friend from Bangalore with his family have been on this trek but get altitude problem from Gorson and kid got headache and vomoting etc...
so one have to be very care full with the kids on this trek as not only experience guide work out but need a good tour operator who can arrange quick rescue on urjent bases as the train is cover up with mobile conectivity. so i recomended always to take help of most valuable local tour operator based in town those can be helpfull in all way.
so please do not forget to take a extra guide or pony on this trek with you who can take extra care of your 6year old kids.
Enjoy the beauty of Nature

Nandadevi thanks for your inputs. Just got off after talking to a guide he says the one could go from Gorson to Tali via Gorson top and avoid the two curves with steep drops. Only problem is this will be a higher altitude.
Just wondering if you have any thoughts about this, or are aware of this route. I agree altitude sickness could be a potential problem as most itenaries don't have time set a side for proper acclamatization.
Thanks,
Vikram

Hey All
I am planning to do a similar trek including Kuari Pass with a few friends Starting 1st June from Auli. Is it possible to find snow during that time? If yes , which are the places where i can get snow?
Incase if there is no snow available there around that time , where can i get snow in Uttarakhand? I know Hampta Pass and Roopkund would have it all year round however , the trek would be too lengthy given that we would be doing Bungy jumping , River Rafting and Paragliding.
Thanks for the help
Happy Trekking All !!

yes i have been there in 2008....at the gorson top is same like kuari top. so if you can extend the time period then i should recomend you other wise with defenetly there will be high altitude problem...as joshimaht is 1980 and gorson top is around 3400 to 3600m......beside this you can undertake beadni trek from wan which is easy and fine with the kids....i wish you best for your trip....
only hamta pass and roopkund lake you can find the snow

Hey Avijnan, actually I'm planning on the same lines with a few of my friends and the dates are the same, too
I have seen in Blog's of slim chances of getting some snow above the hotel Cliff Top, there..
The weather also seems to be colder than average right now and it may further dip this weekend!
Keeping fingers crossed! Any update or further info is most welcome..
BTW, the max weight for paragliding is restricted to 75kgs. Any dope on this, anyone..?
Cheers!!
