Sometime back I thought about starting a unique business offering tourists an insurance coverage with an assured air-lift in case of any emergency anywhere and hiring out a GPS system, an Iridium phone and the services of a 'fixer' in any part of the country that the traveller visits. The fixer would fix things...good boarding, safe food, comfy transportation etc for the tourist. The Iridium phone for emergencies. the GPS to help get back on track and to track the tourist and help him out.....

...someone woke me up. Now back to work. Sorry jyoti...no idea!
...and I took the road less travelled.

Before there is insurance there will have to be that type of air rescure service available in India...

Last time i checked there was none. Do you fear/are concerned needing such rescue? Living close to where there hospitals might work out better IMO.
I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle.

In the high Himalaya a helicopter is of limited use anyway!! The air is to thin for a helicopter to make it over the high ranges!

The Indian Army's choppers arm regulalry flies sorties to the Siachen area where the altitude is 7000 meters above MSL and temmperatures are below freezing. They use the puny little Cheetahs (Hughes variant) for the task.

They also have records for the most no of sorties in Alpine conditions and also for the biggest evacuation at the highest altitude or something like that.

Yeah I know about this but the slightest change in climate would ground such an operation because this is extreme flying!
For rescue purposes unless all the conditions were right the trekker would probably die waiting!!
I think I remember reading that this is why there is no organised Himalayan recue service the logistics are just too unmanagable!

Quite true. In any case, the Army would be put into action if there is a big-scale evac required. No idea if the corps ever rescued a solo tourist.

There are two emergency evacuation companies in India that I have found but airlift is not possible for Indians ironically enough.

http://www.iasindia.com/aboutusdetails.htm

http://www.eastwestrescue.com/index_ie.html

They perform rescues for international insurance companies Indian companies do not cover it.

If uninsured the cost would be at least 2 lakh ruppees.

Dance to the beat of a different drum.

Many travel insurance companies offer policies that cover evacuation by helicopter in an emergency. None of the companies that I know of, however, are based in India. We had clients from India who purchased this type of insurance, though, and it was certainly as valid for them as for anyone else. The logistics for an individual traveller to arrange for helicopter rescue would be hopeless, however. Only a well-connected agency can arrange the necessaries, and even then helicopter rescue is usually impractical. In ten years in the Indian Himalaya, I only rode in an evacuation chopper once, and that wasn't for a medical emergency. Overland evacuation was always more swift and practical for the injured parties.
