Meenakshi Temple in Madurai is one of India's largest and most important. What are you looking for?

I am partial to Madurai over Trichy.
Loved the Meenakshi temple there in Madurai..so beautiful and peaceful. Lots of architecture too.. |

If you are just looking for temples then I would recommend Maduri.

Aruback. We were at Madurai last year. Unfortunately it was the most greedy temple we've been to. The priests are very aggressive at extorting cash from NRI's.

I wholeheartedly agree with shaktipalooza --- the touts from the street followed me into the temple and hassled me inside! The great temple at Rameswaram is my favorite one so far, and I have also been to the temple at Tiruvannamallai. I thought the temple at Rameswaram was exceedingly peaceful...but far from Madurai area for the OP. |

in trichy,there is two temples.
1.srirangam temple(around 10kms).this temple have asia`s biggest tower temple(gopuram). 2.ganesha temple at teppakulam(heart of the city). in madurai, 1.madurai meenakshi temple(one of the nominee of world wonders).this temple is big one 2.thiruparangundram lord murugan temple(around 12 kms). if you have a time, you can cover both trichy and madurai in one day(trichy srirangam temple and madurai meenakshi temple). trichy to madurai is around 80-90kms(around 2.5 hrs travelling).but you started it in very earlierly. i think you are looking for trichy for the purpose of visiting tanjore big temple.(50kms from trichy). most of the forigners prefer madurai meenakshi temple. suresh babu |

I would say Madurai, its not a peaceful place but you should see lots of pilgrims coming in and the temples are impressive. It's a wild city with lots of day and night action.
