Question Travel to Ooty, Munnar and KodaiKanal

Hi Friends,

I am new to this forum. I am planning for a visit to Ooty, Munnar and KodaiKanal somewhere in last week of Nov 2009. I am planning to reach Coimbatore from Mumbai since I am finding trains/flights on this route more suitable for me.

I am planning to start from Mumbai on 21st Nov i.e. Saturday and then reach back to Mumbai on 29th Nov i.e. Sunday. Can some one please guide me the sequences among these 3 places that I should visit. I have read thru lots of threads regarding travel options between these 3 places. But still if some one has already gone thru this path can share his/her experience. Thanks in advance !!

Train 1013 Coimbatore Express leaves LTT at 22:30 and reaches Coimbatore at 06:30. If you take this train then you can leave Mumbai on the 20th.

Thanks Bonded !! I have collected all the information "How to reach Coimbatore"

However, my real curiosity is to find the most convenient way to visit these 3 places after reaching Coimbatore. Shall I visit Munnar first or Ooty or Kodaikanal? and if at all I visit either of them, then what should be the next place? In short, the sequence of these places to be visited so that it is also convenient travelling between these places.

You have got a total of 7 days. It would be better to skip one of the three places.

Distance from Ooty to Kodaikanal is around 260 kms (around 5-6 hours of travel).
Distance from Ooty to Munnar is around 280 kms (around 6-7 hours of travel).
Distance from Kodaikanal to Munnar is around 180 kms (around 3-4 hours of travel).

There would be direct buses between the hill stations but do not know about the frequency and the timings.

Simple plan would be Ooty - Kodaikanal - and then to Munnar as your coming in from Coimbatore. The shortest place from Coimbatore is Ooty. From Ooty, you have overnight buses to Kodaikanal, that reaches in the morning. Dont know about buses from Kodai to Munnar, but I would recommend hiring a pvt vehicle to munnar, the route worth it. Spend 2 days in Ooty, a day and half in Kodai, and remaining in Munnar.

Drop one of the three places...Unless you have some compelling reason, I would suggest to drop ooty...and cover only kodai and munnar...

Instead of reaching Coimbatore, plan to reach kodai road station / madurai station

Head to Kodaikanal. After staying kodaikanal, there is a route that branches of from Kodaikanal to Munnar. You dont have to get back to kodai road.

Finish Munnar and then head to Cochin and catch your return train to Mumbai from there.

Cheers

I would also suggest that you spend ideally all the 7 days at any one of the three places which are after all hill stations.

Alternately if you must see two, then skip Ooty even though it is undoubtedly closer to Coimbatore, and do Munnar & Kodai as these two are somewhat in the same region.

Kodai is about 5 hours by road from Coimbatore but as Ribhu suggests you could get off at Kodaikanal Road station and take a taxi / bus from there which is closer; alternately take a taxi or bus from Coimbatore.

From Kodaikanal you can go to Munnar either by taxi / share taxi or by bus via Periyakulam, Bodi and Devikulam. And from Munnar to Coimbatore is a scenic road route via Udumalpet, but as Ribhu suggests, there are more options by public transport to get you to Cochin, from where you could take your return flight or train.
