We will be traveling to Bangalore and Mysore.

What are the travel options from Mysore to Ooty?
There is a 60 km train line from Mysore that ends at Chamarajnagar.
Are shared taxis available from there to Ooty?

From Ooty, the nearest airport is Coimbatore, right?

Thanks for reading through this.

Travel options from Mysore to Ooty could be train up to Chamarajnagar (which you have correctly identified) besides bus from Mysore and Chamarajnagar. I have not seen shared taxi plying between the places.
You are correct - nearest airport from Ooty is Coimbatore!

There are direct buses from Mysore to Ooty if you prefer traveling by bus. You can check KSRTC. Specify what service you want to travel in while searching.
Kedar Janani Devasthan, Mt Abu - Udaipur, Bharatpur, Agra, Gwalior, Orchha, Jhansi,
Satara

Of course I speak to myself. I need expert advice sometimes.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Are there Volvo buses from Mysore?
How long does it take by bus?
Are there Karnataka / Tamil Nadu Govt or private buses?

We would prefer to travel by shared taxis or mini-buses if possible.

Chamaraj Nagara is NO WAY enroute for Mysore to OOTY.Avoid that.

There are Normal buses every 1 hour in day time(Both Tamilnadu and Karnataka Government buses. No Private bus available).
Avoid at any cost Mini-bus looking for Passengers in front of Mysore KSRTC busstand or Ooty Busstand. They will test our patience and stop at places and it should be avoided.

Volvo / Ambaris are very minimal and they take close to 4 1/2 hours to 5 hours.

Hope this helps

good to hear that the road will be closed....it sure is total nuisance for the inhabitants of the sanctuary.....moreso as the trucks make sure that they honk their way through the sanctuary and other vehicles also keep stopping on the way...although i hope there would be a alternate route too for emergencies

We took the bus from Mysore to Ooty, the bus was comfortable ,took around 4 hours and can see allot and really enjoyed the trip. As said before a BIG NO to the minivans. After spending a lot of money when visiting the Simnapal nature reserve saw more wild animals at a fraction of cost passing through the Bandipur National park. Must add that the bus trip was much nicer than Ooty.

The proposed closure of road from 6 PM to 6 AM passing through Bandipur is not implimented because of resistence from the local villagers and border states of Kerla and TN .
But the current closure from 9 PM to 6 AM is still followed.

Ok I do this route very very often.

1) The gates of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve close at 9 PM and open at 6 AM currently. The 6 PM closure plan is on stand by.

2) This means that you have to leave Mysore to make the Bandipur forest check post before 630 PM. Note that the LAST BUS* is an AC Volvo that departs Mysore at 630 PM.

3) There are frequent buses from the Govt. Bus Stand, to Ooty from 5 AM to 5 PM. After 5 PM, as mentioned above, there is an AC Volvo (Rs 250) at 6 30 PM. After that, there are 4 buses that ply to Ooty in the night. Only these buses have special permission to cross the gate into Bandipur. I am not sure of their timings. But to catch these, you will have to wait for a long time in the bus stand. And if they are full, as they come in from Bangalore, pop goes the weasel. Plus, you will reach Ooty at an ungodly hour. (Or as the cops in Chennai put it, "untime.")

4) Go to the Govt Bus stand in Mysore and catch the bus. DO NOT BE TEMPTED by touts trying to get you into share taxis in mini cabs. They will cram up at least 3 times the actual seating capacity of the vehicles, no kidding, and will take MUCH longer.

5)This is the easiest route from Bangalore. Or alternatively, go to the KSRTC stand in Bangalore (which is again the easiest way to get to Mysore, catch the Volvo AC express shuttle services which take under 3 hours, while the rest take over 4 hours) and catch a direct bus AC Volvo to Ooty. I know 2 that departure timings 8 30 AM and 9 30 AM.

The easiest way to get to Ooty from Bangalore, and the most comfortable is to catch the Express shuttle train, the Shatabdi ( Rs 240, 2 hours, 11 am dept. except Wednesdays) and then catch ab auto to the Mysore KSRTC bus stand. (Rs 20) The train arrives at 1 PM and you will find an AC Volvo bus to Ooty waiting for it, departing at 1:30 PM.

From Mysore, the travel time is under 5 hours to Snooty Ooty.

Do not even think about going to Chamrajnagar, Sathy and Coimbatore. The climb up the hill that side is MUCH more tedious, tiresome and longer.
