The Nicest Place to stay in Kanyakumari? Best things to do?

Hello,

Can anyone advise a nice place to stay in Kanyakumari other than the couple of 2-3 Star hotels that pop up on all the travel sites? I'm looking for a nice room with double bed (or bigger), bath (attached preferred), and maybe some "atmosphere?" Something like a heritage home or cottage. It can be off the beaten path (I'll have a car) but does need to provide meals or have a restaurant nearby. I'll be in the area for a week or so and will have some entertaining to do, so any suggestions as to restaurants or other places to go would be appreciated.

I won't say "money's no object" but it's not much of one.

Also, if you know of a nice beach within and hour or to or any other 1-day excursions one should do from a Kanyakumari base, I've be quite grateful. Thanks!

Diana

Vivekanada Ashram... hands down...one of the best places to stay not only in Kanyakumari but in country !!

However they don't have a 'restaurant', they do have a canteen, where they serve typical south Indian combos...

You can hire a cottage with couple of rooms and kitchen and do your own basic cooking ...its for around Rs.2000.

Normal AC rooms for single occupancy would be around Rs.500-600.

They have their own sunrise beach...and access to main market is hardly 1-2 KM...for that as well they have free bus service...

Non AC rooms are very cheap...its a big campus..very peaceful indeed !!

Long time ago I had stayed at Vivekananda Ashram. That time facilities were very limited and still I enjoyed my stay. I remember they had a dairy and also grew vegetables. I hadvery good fresh milk and simple but decent food.

A word of caution here. Some parts of the coastline is rocky and have very strong current. I escaped with injuries trying to swim.

I'd not thought of an ashram but I've been wanting to try something like that. It is ok to stay in one even if you have other plans out and about?

How do you contact this ashram for more info?

Looks a good option for a few days relaxing stay at Kanyakumari. thanks for the link. A maximum of 3 days stay is permiteed at a time, however there is provision for extension.

I'm just going to chime in with another vote for the Vivekananda Ashram. It's a glorious and magical place.

I've scoped out all of the so called 3 star joints along the strip of them located along the beach just east of the pilgrimage nexus and found them all to be wanting: overdone faux luxury set within a miasma of camphor balls and undaunted giant roaches that crawl up from the drains when the lights go out.

(I was afraid of that...it worries me when I see tiny artfully-fuzzy photos on a web site! )

Not to make old thread alive again...but I was wondering if advance reservation is required for Vivekanand Ashram? I was reading the website http://www.vkendra.org/accomodations.htm and are the rates per night, or for 3 days?

They are per night. Cannot answer the 'required' thing, depends on lot of factors. But yes, its recommended.
