Hotel in Tiruvannamalai?
we are going to Tiruvannamalai from Mamallapuram and would like to stay 1 night. Anyone have tips on the best hotels in town, we'd like to stay as central as possible? Budget is not a problem.

Its a nice laid back town, with rooms of all budgets available. I would suggest you to drive over to the area around the temple and follow your heart.
Sorry I cant really recommend a good hotel, but if you want a good priest to help out around the temple, pm me for a reference.

Sesha Bavan Guest House was recommended to me by someone who stayed there -- I did not stay there because I had changed my mind about staying overnight. R. Arulmani is the proprietor and his # is 9443446089 The person who gave me the reference said the place was so clean one could sleep on the floor. If you stay there, please post your review/experience!

Thanjavur or Tiruvannamalai?
Sorry if I am asking many questions right now
, but we are finalizing our trip and need plenty of information. If you had to choose between these towns (Thanjavur or Tiruvannamalai), which one is best? Our preferences are photography, holy men, sadhus, colors and friendly people. Architecture comes socondly. We won't have time to visit both places so which one should we choose? Hope you can help, this forum is soo great for information. |

thanjavur is very laid back, although arguably the most important temple in Tamil Nadu, architecturally. Tiruvanmalai is not as stately, but has a much livelier local "scene."
you can't go wrong with either one!

tiruvanamalai is wonderful. stayed at a place called hotel trishul which was passable, not great. the phone number in the lonely planet for this hotel is, however, not correct (an extra 2 or something). that poor man whose number it is must be wondering why a bunch of foreigners (and a few indians) keep phoning him up!

for holy, sadhus etc. thiruvannamalai is very best.
thanjavur is for big temple for architecht purpose.there is a big nandhi( statue of cow made from one big stone is wonderful to see). but not for holy or sadhu purpose. thiruvannamalai is famous siva temple for one of five(fire, water, land, sky, wind) siva temple(for fire). thiruvannamalai is famous for full moon(pournami).you can see lot and lot of people and sadhus on that day(coming feb.1)for giri valam(walk around mountain about 14km on foot hills).on that way, there were 8 siva temple, ramana ashram and some other ashram is located. you can also see peoples on othere days also but less crowd.on full moon day, there will so much crowd. suresh babu |
