Thanjavur/kumbakonam excursions

Hi,

We plan a 5 day stay in Kumbakonam. Any ideas of excurions that one could make in the Thanjavur district?. We are travelling with kids so temple visits may not be so "interesting". I was thinking of Thanjavur palace etc ..

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks.

Mosdt of the things in the district are temples...,you can also visit on the seaside: Tranquebar(Taramgambadi) a former danish colony and some curious fishing villages.

It's a pity if you miss Gangaikondacholapuram, Thanjavur, Chidambaram, Dharasuram, Swamimalai etc., also a curious place: Vaitisvankhoil (famous astrologhers)

Not Exactly near Kumbakonam but Point calimere Sanctuary( Kodiakarai in local language) is worth a visit [ Dysfunct Light house and Deers / Wild pigs are the main attraction). You need to take the route Mannargudi, Tiruthuraipoondi (This is My home Town(?!) Village), vedaranyam to reach kodiakarai (Around 100 kms total oneway). In this entire route, the road is average but passes thru Cauvery delta( Kilometres of Paddy fields all over) with several ponds / Lakes /Rivers on the way.

From Thiruthuraipoondi, you could visit Muthupettai (Mangrove forests -During Tsunami this area escaped due to the mangrove forests) and Thillaivilagam Bird Sanctuary.

Beware this entire route is off-the track and not so touristy and you could seldom see any non-indian tourists.

If at all if this sounds interesting Please post so that I could provide more info!!

Hi,

Few days back I responded to the same query from you on the following link . Please have a look whether it suits you .

Interstate/Intercity Buses

If the train timings are not suiting you, you could catch a bus from Kumbakonam to Thanjavur followed by another bus to Trichy and from tiruchy you have "N" number of buses to Coimbatore (From KMU - CBE by this way you will take atleast 8 hours or so and tiresome).. From Kumbakonam , there are quite a few Omni buses (PRivate , Push-back luxury buses ply to Coimbatore but all will start at late night and reach CBE by early morning).. You could try that too !.

And Regarding Cab, I don't have any idea.
Hope this helps

Hi meenakshi,
You are in the midst of the temple region of tamil nadu. You have tens of interesting temples, churches and mosque in this region. But the most interesting temple is the Abhirami temple close to Karikal. This is the temple where couples who are 60 years and above get married again, it is very interesting to see couples who are 60, 70 and even 80 years getting married once again. On an auspecious day you see nearly 30 to 40 couples performing their wedding ceremony.
Travelling by bus is not a problem in tamil nadu, you can travel from kovai to kombakonam directly or change at salem/trichy/tanjur. The frequency of buses will be 30 to 45 min.
A taxi will cost you apprxm 1900 per day for an indica car.
