Thanjavur and Trichy
I'm having a weekend away from Bangalore, getting the Friday sleeper train into Thanjavur and the Sunday sleeper train from Trichy.
Anyway, which of these is worth spending a little more time in than the other, ie which one is it preferable to stay the night? From the sounds of the LP then Trichy is better food-wise, but Thanjavur is better accom-wise. |

I have spent the night with friends in Trichy, so I can't give you infos about accomodation. Just wanted to tell you that I loved the temple in Thanjavur in the evening light..... But I think there is a lot more to see in Trichy, the temple in Srirangam (?), the rock fort.....it's just much bigger.

the Ideal River Resort is a great place to stay, highly recommended if you have the bucks. Maybe about $30 US, but you get a world class joint. A few km from Thanjavur, they'll shuttle you about. The food is superb, the cottages are very quiet and clean, and the malis "sweep" the lawn! I can't praise them enuff.
Thanjavur is essentially the temple and out, although you could go to the palace, I suppose. Not worth crying about if you don't. Tiruchy has several places to visit. The Rock fort temple, and Srirangam, which is reported to be the largest in India, both take some time. BTW- I'm headed to the Ideal resort in Mahabs to cool off before going back to USA at weeks end. Here's the site- give them a call for a booking! http://www.idealresort.com/thanjavur.htm

Hi Kiwi Razz,
Like Bijapuri I also recommend Ideal River View Hotel in Thanjavur. . On the other hand Trichy is a very extended and dusty town, and nothing to see/to do a part the visit to Srirangam temple town. The Rock Fort was for me disappointing. |

what do you think about spending 4 days in Kumbakonam, 1 day in Thanjavur, and on to Madurai, skipping Trichy? Would I really be missing out? I'm just trying to travel as little as possible. |

Yeah, the Ideal River Resort was the reason I was tempted to stay in Thanjavur. Perhaps I will just make do with lunch there and head to Trichy on the Saturday afternoon sometime.
