Hi, I'm not sure if there's a yes/no answer; I suppose the weather may vary, like anywhere else.

Depends how you see it. When I was there in winter it was mostly like drizzling and fogged-up all day long. Reminded me of winter in the Andes somehow. It wasn't very wet nor very cold, however it was so pervasive that it would get to you in a different way. Another pic: http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...15/ppuser/5654

Hm. You'll be driving yourself? The road up here (if I remember correctly) is y'r classic winding mountain road with buses and trucks overhauling on blind corners and stuff, and the occasional piece of wreckage down some ravines, all of this amidst a whole lotta beeping, of course. Not for the faint-hearted I'd say, but doable, I guess.

No advice on kids here. One of the cheapest options in town (or on its edges, rather) is the Youth Hostel or whatever its precise name is. It's big, and in winter we had the place to ourselves. It's set on some pretty large grounds I think, I seem to remember some swings and stuff too, and it has fantastic views, that we got a few seconds to see every day, again it was fog-bound. But I reckon kids might like it here. (It's a bit of a walk into town btw, not very far, but still. It's not central, which you might consider a pro or a con.) Bring some blankets, although they'll provide some, but the more the better, I had trouble keeping warm here. (All of this is over a decade ago btw, who knows what it looks like today.) There's a pic here, again, I saw this minus the views, but it must have been taken from the same room: http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s.../ppuser/4/sl/a (Greenlands Youth Hostel, that's it, their site is here: http://greenlandskodaikanal.com/ ).

Just an update on this, in case anyone is heading this direction.

This year's NW Monsoon seems to have been a complete non-event here in Chennai. This time last year we were swimming. this year... nothing.

Luckily we had unusual rainfall in the summer, and got an unusual share of the SW monsoon, so I think the city has enough water for the year ahead. We hope.

There's been some drizzle today, and some rain is forecast for next week --- doesn't look like much is going to happen though.

When I was in Chennai 2 years ago during December, there had been heavy rains and flooding in the low areas. But this did not affect me a whole lot. The weather was for the most part very comfortable although maybe a tad more humid than I am used to. Even so, I was content in short sleeves during the day although it did sometimes get a little nippy at night. I would skip the rain jacket (you will suffocate!) and just buy an umbrella once you get there.

I'll be back in Chennai this December too.

the tropic of cancer runs right through Bhopal.
the tropic of capricorn runs 60 km north of Alice Springs .The equator almost bifurcates Singapore.

Coming from Australia in high summer( days of 40 C Plus on end , nights in the 20's C) is always a plus when I visit south India or SE asia in Feb.Only the humidity is greater by the sea.

I needed my shawl at night in Kodai in Dec.

I'd probably need mine in the daytime.

Certainly I would higher up in the hills.
