Tamil Nadu Weather

I just checked into the India climate chart for Tamil Nadu for December-January and it says Monsoon in December and Winter in January. Can anybody give me more specific weather info for packing purposes? Rain gear? Warm clothes?

We will be travelling in Chennai, Madurai, Kodaikanal, Trichy.

Thank you!

Monsoon should be over by mid-December.

What you consider our winter to be like will depend on what climate you are used to!

I know that, going there from London for the first time, in December, I found it stiffling!

Now I'm used to it, I find it quite chilly! 20s, maybe low 30s...

Hi Nick,

Assuming you meant 20/30 celsius??? I know in the north it was often hot during the daytime/in the sun but cold at night and especially indoors (no central heating). But I am just hearing that Tamil Nadu will be hot, hot hot.

20/30 celsius???

God, yes!

Even at night it will be hot and stuffy, though cooler than the day. I think I saw 19.something as lowest temperature for last twelve months somewhere recently. Should never be colder than an English warm summern day

When I was in Kodaikanal in December it was ff'ing wet and freezing and cold. See also http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...14/ppuser/5654 .

Anyway, just to have some idea, I suppose it varies. See also India climate chart , check down that thread some for other pointers.

Agree btw not in the hills it will be no problem, may drop to 20C'ish, chilly if you've been around for a while. There's some stuff on the winter monsoon on that thread as well btw; doesn't mean it gets cold though, far from it. Mostly wet, but it's manageable, or when I was there.

Hill stations, yes: chilly.

Especially if you've had a while to start getting used to the plains temperature.

"Freezing" --- metaphorically rather than actual (I "froze" in Ooty in July!); we do not have snow on the Nilgiris peaks. Apparently they are the only mountains of that hight in the world not to be snow-capped.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out. I never checked but I reckon something like 10C'ish -- cold enough if you didn't expect it & were under the illusion of being in a semi-tropical country

there's nothing 'semi' about it, Mach --- the equator is only a few hundred miles away!

Had looked it up later, yes; apparently the border passes somewhere midway through India. Was just trying to avoid the "it's not the tropics!! " comments But I guess you can't win 'em all

Not at all sure where the tropic line runs... I don't think, as you say, that all of India is in the tropics.

The Captain might tell us?

I don't know, I was looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropics , but I'm not sure if it's as strictly defined and/or if those longitudes are as sharp.

Coming from the USA i lived in Pondy for 4 months Jan-April. The weather was about equal to the hottest parts of our summer during there winter. I got use to it pretty quick though.

Question Kodaikanal

Hi

This is my 1st post in this great forum. I am planning to travel to Kodaikanal in South India around 23rd December with my family. I have been reading conflicting information regarding the weather during December in KodaiKanal. Any information on the following would be greatly appreciated.

- Does it rain heavily in December in Kodaio to the extent that you cannot venture out?
- I will be travelling by road. Are the roads leading to Kodaikanal safe to travel? Is this a winding road?
- What is the best place to stay that has some activities for Kids?

Thanks

Mohamed Ali
