Tamil Nadu Tsunami Damage

anybody in the Tamil Nadu area know if any of the rail tracks were damaged because of the tsunami.
We are planning on traveling extensively the later part of February in the area.
Having been in India before during a cyclone I know that repairs are not quick coming.
Didn't see anything on the Indian rail web site yet but might be too soon.

railtracks in tamilnadu

There are no report about damage to train tracks in Tamilnadu. Since you are visiting only during later part of Feb., no need to worry atall. Incase anyone visits tamilnadu, better to keep off visiting coastal areas like Nagapattinam because you will find it difficult to stay there as releif measures are going on.

How has Mamallapuram fared? I have friends there and have not been able to get through on phone lines, but haven't read anything about the place in the news stories. I am still planning to go there on Jan 22, but am anxious for news. Anyone know if it was hard hit?

Mamallapram had a number of deaths (mostly fishermen, but I heard there were some tourists swimming at the time who are unaccounted for) and a lot of damage to the seaside area shops, hotels and restaurants. I haven't heard anything about the shore temple, but it must have been flooded as well..

nature's fury

Mamallapuram was not affected that much. The casualities were much less.
Mostly there weredamages to the petty shops and houses that were near the sea shore..The hotels and lodges asked the inmates to vacate the buildings and move over to another place.Powe was cutoff as a precautionary measure.
Your freinds must have moved to some other place, i suppose due to situation explained above.
so no need to worry about your frends...they must be safe.
Pls free to ask any information.
By the time you visit 22Jan, hope normalcy would have returned.

Thanks, Citybell.
I got through to my friends finally on the phone today and they are fine. They said there was not a lot of damage to Mahaballipuram, most of the damage was further south.

I took this photo a couple of weeks ago in Pondicherry. It seemed funny at the time - but it isn't funny now.

Friends in Mahabalipuram

Citybell, are you in Mahaballipuram? I have some friends who are Rajastani painters (I believe the only ones) there, and want to make sure they are okay. My friend's name is Pankaj. Any info would be helpful. My name is Geoffrey.

Thanks!
