Question Swimming in Tamil Nadu

Where can you find good swimming in Tamil Nadu?

For instance: a lake warm enough for good swimming in April or May with not too many people around..nice scenery

Any beach recommendations are very much welcome but I also love lakes, waterfalls, and other natural freshwater swimming destinations.

U have plenty of beaches.Avoid Chennai marina unless u want to be with people.

I suggest beaches of mahabalipuram,velankanni,rames hwaram(mandapam) .

Rivers -there is mighty cauvery and her distributaries.cauvery and her sisters run through the trichy-thanjavur-kumbakonam belt.you will be easily able to spot them while you ride from kumbakonam to thanjavur.

thamarabarani runs in thinulveli.vaigai runs in madurai.

One places i suggest is near pollachi. Its known as attapadi in kerala there is guest house/resort not fancy but very basic .you will find starting of many rivers in that region and great scenary.you will find no people there absolutely none.its like in middle of dense forest.its very close to silent valley national park.

RIVERS:
======
The Kuntipuzha River drains the entire 15 km length of the park from north to south into the Bharathapuzha River. Kuntipuzha River divides the park into a narrow eastern sector of width 2 kilometers and a wide western sector of 5 kilometers. The river is characterized by its crystal clear and perennial nature. The main tributaries of the river, kunthancholapuzha, Karingathodu, Madrimaranthodu, Valiaparathodu and Kummaathanthodu originate on the upper slopes of the eastern side of the valley. The river is uniformly shallow, with no flood plains or meanders. Its bed falls from 1,861 m to 900 m over a distance of 12 km, the last 8 km being particularly level with a fall of only 60 m. Kuntipuzha is one of the less torrential rivers of the Western Ghats, with a pesticide-free catchment area.

You might also avoi Marina Beach if you don't want to drown.

There is a sign, warning of the danger, and announcing how many deaths this year. Many, many people ignore it and, yes, OK... they don't all drown

I have noticed on other threads as well as this one about people drowning. Are the tides strong? Do they pull you under, or do people not know how to swim? Where Im from the waves are pretty big and a great place to surf and competitions are held.(Im not a surfer) Ive been pulled under a gang of times and even got caught in a strong tide that I could not swim straight back into land. In these cases you must swim either left or right until you are out of the current.

I was also wondering about sharks and crocodiles. I thought this may be a big reason why I do not see people swimming in the pics I have seen of Indias beaches. I read the crocodiles have adapted to both fresh and salt water

There must be quite a few who's final thought was, "Learning to swim! I knew there was something I meant to do". Much the same thing probably applies to learning to drive, except those victims may not have time to think.

Actually, there are a lot of casualties in inland waters. One recent death was that of a child who jumped into deep water... he couldn't swim. Others can be victims of the same dangers that face those who want to mess around in water the world over: thick mud under the water, getting tangled in weed or debris, unexpected deep spots, and so on.

Where the sea is concerned, around Chennai, I think that the danger is caused by the fact that the beach falls away very steeply, so a step or two can take a person out of their depth, and the undertow is very strong.

Notwithstanding all this, you will see lots of people swimming.
