Stay in Madurai

check out Hotel GTR Regency in palanganatham not far from Taj Retreat and i checked it out....its pretty decent and is much cheaper than Taj....it even has a small pool..

Does anyone have any updates on Madurai accommodation, please?

Looking at Northgate as a possibility....but there's been no feedback from TonyH since his stay, so would like updated info if poss.

Park Plaza and Golden Park look the best of the other options from the Hotels section, so updates on these would be welcome, too.

Alternative suggestions also welcomed.

I stayed at the Park Plaza ... perfectly acceptable and reliable hotel ... not cheap but a fair price for fair mid range quality ... there may well be better options but people I talked with who were old Madurai hands said that it was their hotel of preference because of its 'reliability' and the quality of the service ... however given the nature of Madurai don't accept a room facing the station as the trains can be very noisy/excited when they enter the junction. As the hotel is used by some tour groups remember that the odd tour group can be a little 'excited' as they troop to their rooms and can arrive at odd hours ... however resisting the temptation to abuse them with a few well chosen rudenesses derived from national stereotypes can sooth one's bile on these rare occasions but this caveat is applicable to all the hotels in this range/area
