Hi All,

I am a new member of this group.

I am planning to drive down from Bangalore to Kumbakonam around the end of December. I was trying to identify the most ideal route. The priorities are:

1. Time & Comfort (good roads)
2. Distance

I browsed through some maps and identified 2 possible routes:

Route 1

Bangalore - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Namakkal - Karur - Trichy - Thanjavur - Kumbakonam

Route 2

Bangalore - Hosur - Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Salem - Perambalur - Ariyalur - Thanjavur(?) - Kumbakonam

I would like to have advice whether there are routes that I can take. Also details on which would be the fastest route. For information, I drive a Mahindra Scorpio. I am traveling with the family. I am planning to leave early in the morning (around 5.30 AM) from Bangalore. I would also appreciate if I could get advice on the places to stop for Breakfast and Lunch.

Thanks in advance!!

Srinivasan

travel fair

I am planning a visit to kumbakonam from Bangalore I have browsed for the possible route and got two options:
route 1
Bangalore, krishnagiri, dharmapuri, salem, namakkal, karur, trichy, thanjavur and kumbakonam approx 430 kms

route 2
Bangalore, krishnagiri, dharmapuri, salem, perambalur, ariyalur, thanjavur and kumakonam
approx 380kms
I would like to invite suggestions about the route and road condition. I have ruled out thiruvannamalai route since it is worst for the travellers I had done this route in the recent past to pondicherry, it was a nightmare the pot holes are so big that you can burry elephants and horses. I hope the authorities will evince some interest in upgrading this road, since the bangalore tourist will dread to take this road.

My advice will be the following route:

Bangalore-Krishnagiri-Dharmapuri-Salem-Namakkal-Trichy-Kumbakonam (You can take Thanjavur bye-pass to reach Kumbakonam). There is a route from Namakkal to Trichy which is 85 Kms and the road condition is some what ok when compared to Karur -Trichy Road. You have to enter Namakkal town to reach Trichy and route goes via Thottiyam, Musiri.

Avoid going via ariyalur as Perambalur-Ariyalur-Thanjavur route is equivalent to Krishnagiri-Thiruvannamalai Route.

Hi, I would need to travel from Thanjavur to Bangalore on the 15th or 18th of June and am not sure that relatives can get me on the train (they would be booking tickets tomorrow only). In the worst case scenario that I cant get on the train (not too sure how this tatkal thingy works even), can I get a car and driver to get us there to B'lore? Approx time and cost? There are three of us confirmed but another child and adult may join.

We'd be flying back and would prefer to do a rail or road journey to B'lore.

Thanks.

Its raining there now. Most probably mid-July to mid-August is ok. As far as hotels are concerned, you can try Hotel Rayas, Hotel ARK. Regarding Restaurants, Hotel Venkatramana is the best and Hotel Meenakshi Bhavan is also there. If your purpose of visit is for the temples then mid-july to mid-august is best and will be less crowded.

I agree.

Hotel Rayas is a good place to stay at Kumbakonam, Ive stayed there twice and been more than satisfied.

July is possibly the best month to visit the Cauvery delta temples. The weather is usually overcast and very bearable and there are hardly any crowds.

Smile Bangalore to Kumbakonam via Salem,Vridachalam

We had an excellent trip to kumbakonam via salem from bangalore. We took the following route which was good most of the route..

Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Salem - Attur - Vridachalam - Jayamkondam - Kumbakonam.

The total distance is just less than 400 kms. The roads is good throughout except bangalore to krishnagiri which is a bit bad, krishnagiri to salem is excellent.

Salem to Vridachalam is very good. you need to go along the attur - chennai national highway, take a right at about 25 kms after crossing attur, which takes you to the road that leads to vridachalam. Except for some rough patches the route is very good.

If you want to take a trip to Chidambaram, you can take a road from vridachalam to chidambaram.

Take a right just before vridachalam, you have sign board to Jayamkondam. On reaching jayamkondam you need to take a left that goes towards Jayamkondam x-roads via Gangai konda cholapuram. Take a right on the chennai- kumbaokonam road at jayakondam x-road towards kumbakonam.
This stretch goes through anakarrai. if you have time, do visit couple of vishnu stalams near anakkarai, one of which is 108 divya desam of perumal

Overall good route. Covered the entrire trip in a running time of 6 hours 30 mintues. Offcourse add another 1-2 hours for breaks, lunch/dinner etc.

Beware there is no much help on the Akkur - vridachalam route for food or car breakdown. So carry some food if you are going through this route with children.
