Pondicherry to Trichy?

Anyone got any suggestions for the best non-bus method to get to Trichy from Pondicherry? I assume a train and then change onto another train? Or maybe hire a car to a rail junction and then a train from there?
Or maybe just hire a driver for the whole route if that would work out quicker.
(travelling this Sunday probably if that's relevant).

Double check this on a map.

There are loads of trains from Villuparam Jn to Trichy, Villuparam is about 30kms from Pondi, but double check, I'm going from memory, and I'm getting old.

yes - you're right - once I looekd at a map it was obvious, there's loads.
Though at slightly bizarre times - almost all in the middle of the night or early evening, but I suppose that's because they're from Chennai.
Unofortunately, as i should have predicted, every hotel in Trichy seems to be booked up so now got to figure out a new route anyway. But it's the same trains for Madurai so it's still useful.

Of course most trains were booked as well as the hotels... ended up getting a sleeper class tektal (always wondered what those were for) ticket straight to madurai. Have to do Trichy another time. Briefly considered hiring a driver, but it's just too long to spend in a car for us.
