pondicherry to Kumbakonam by train,bus,taxi?

AFAIK there are no train services from Pondy to Kumbakonam. Bus/Taxi is the best option and the travel should be around 3-4 hrs from Pondy.

There are plenty of buses from Pondy main bus stand next to Mars hotel. i guess, a bus leaves every 30 minutes to that part. You may also check out Chidamabram, a beautiful temple for Lord Nataraja , the ong of Dance, about 1 and a half hours from Pondy. From chidambaram you can go to Kumbakonam.

We drove to Kumbakonam earlier this year after stopping over in Pondy. The roads were mostly good but very bad in some areas. Gangaikondacholapuram enroute was magnificent.
