Pondicherry

Can someone please explain something to me ... look at this website

and tell my why 4 places say pondicherry????????? I thought that was one city name. Am I missing something????

These places have (Pondicherry) underneath them:
Yanam
Karaikal
Mahe

Pondicherry has (Puduchchery) underneath it??????????????????

HUH????

They were all ex French colonies and were all administered from Pondicherry, I think they still have some kind of autonomy from Delhi.

Pondicherry I think is now a state..it used to be union territory...the reason you are seeing pondicherry...in three places is because they have now made a state out of city pondicherry and it has these three small cities now..
a union territory is a region that is administered directly by federal govt...somewhat like washington dc....india used to have 9 uniion territoriss.& 25 states..they have been changing them all to states..like here...
