Has anyone stayed at one of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram guest houses? Any tips?

Thanks.

I know some Ashram Guest houses from personal experience. Unfortunately I have to tell you that you have zero chance to get into one around Xmas-New Year. Then Pondy is packed with Indian visitors, mainly Bengalis, Oriyas among others. Hotels are packed too. Otherwise I can give you detailed info on some of the Ashram guest houses, depending on what you want. There are good places that are as low as Rs 40 a day.

If you arrive in Pondy after Jan 4, you might get a room somewhere.

If you cannot change your plans about arriving in Pondy, you should try to book a room immediately (today) at Auroville, which is rural, out in the country, but good value, generally in a relaxing environment. Auroville is fully booked too at Xmas, but perhaps you still have a chance now to book something.

if you get something, order an AV taxi to pick you up at the airport or trainstation. They are among the best drivers you can get in India. Chennai drivers do not know their way in AV, it is difficult to get to community guest houses without knowing the way exactly.

There are also Point-to-Point Buses from Chennai to Pondy for Rs 150. Take about 2 hours.

Hi Atala,
Can you give me advice about where to stay in Auroville? I'm looking for a place for the whole month of february that would be fairly quiet, where I could study and not be around too many people interested in drinking or smoking. I am traveling alone, very happily, a 56 year old woman, musician (harmonium), and lived in Auroville myself... but 30 years ago...
