Looking for some info on these two spots. Have 4 spare days beginning of August, thought we should check these places out. Any advice?

should have mentioned that we travel with 3 little girls (6,4,and1). High view points may have to wait a few years.

I agree with mpop on Coonor. Near Coonor is another charming place called Wellington. Both these are worth visiting, though personally I do not care much for Ooty.

I haven't been to Tirupati, so cannot comment, apart from saying that it is basically a place of religious interest for Hindus.

Of course, they are very different from each other. One is a temple town, the other a hill stn. I haven't been to either in years, but if your girls like the temple scene, then Tirupati, which also has some hills about it, might work. Conoor would be nice for natural stuff, but likely to be wetter. Of course Tirupati is closer to you.
Conoor will be cooler, tho. In fact chilly when raining

not sure what happened there.

Is Tirupati not peaceful? Are tourists welcomed there?

I think "peaceful temple town" is an oxymoron...

Thirupathi is temple town,if you are Hindu then its ok you can visit inside temple. To enter inside after buying ticket be prepared to wait for few hrs.Its calm&clean place. Its one of the richest God in India.

If you are not intersted temple ,then Ooty is best .

Lightbulb The jungles on Tirupati Hilltop !!!

I visited Tirupati only once at the beginning of July (monsoon) fully prepared to wait it out in the so-called queues etc. What a shock I had when I lined up at 5 am to see NO ONE else in the line !! Some others came and joined later. Subsqntly we were told darshan is "closed" and to come in the afternoon at 1 pm.

My friend and I had perforce a walking tour of Tirupati & its environs. What a pleasant surprise!! Cuz its so much revered, the trees were TALL and undisturbed with luxuriant vegetation. (no trees cut!) (this you can otherwise see only in the deep jungles) The second oldest geological rock arch (600 mill yrs old)was another wonderful sight. (Tirupati used it as an entrance arch, so the story goes). The asphalt road was dyed a deep purple with the fallen black jaamun fruit (no body to eat it!!)(just now in mumbai its in ... very short season ... very expensive) Nobody else walking on the road... a few cars maybe passing. The sun also played hide and seek with the monsoon clouds, so it wasn't sunny. It drizzled, didn't pour. When I am writing this, I am actually transported there. It was as heaven on Earth. I was mentally expecting a noisy temple town, so it hit me all the more.

In short God ensured that I see the God-made part of an otherwise raucous temple town. Most pilgrims come with older family members. Hence, hardly anyone walks thru the hilltop... they don't know what they are missing! I also saw cottages/dorms scattered thruout the hilltop. I said to myself, If I'm gonna come again, it will be in July... and I'm gonna stay on TOP(at least three days), in a cottage far away from the temple (the entire top is governed by the trust) which means it will be in luxuriant jungle, preferably near a jaamun tree, so that I can gorge myself silly on jaamuns.

Of course, I had darshan in the queue which was long in the afternoon. Yet it took only 120 mins ? Quite a short time. The sanctum sanctorum was very powerful in vibes, naturally. After 1992, I haven't had a chance to visit again.

Thank you Tirupati, for indulging this nature lover with your pristine best!!

it used to be you could pay extra, I mean, "Special Darshan" fee, and get in the short queue. Anyone know if this is still true?

Wink

Hi,

I visited Tirupati twice & both the time I purchase tickets for the special darshan .Now it depends upon how much you are paying ,there are rate /charts shown in the counter . Pay the higher amount the shorter will the line for darshan.

I personally think that if anyone who has set his mind for darshan should visit Tirupati .it is not a holiday spot but a holiplace. For hollidaying OOTY/COONOOR is the best place no doubt.

Thanx
