Ooty Travel Information - Time and Stay

Is June 3rd week good time (in terms of avoiding monsoon rain) to visit Ooty?

How much time/day one can consider as sufficient to visit Ooty? 1.5 or 2 days are ok to visit all the places?

Which is the best place/hotel to stay in Ooty? My Budget is about INR2000 to 3000. Is AC room require to stay in Ooty?

Thanks

AC? No... you are more likely to need an electric heater! It will be cold!

I really read your post as planning to visit on June 3rd, and was thinking you'd left it a bit late to get there today!

But 3rd week, makes my experience more useful: 1st week of July two years ago: wet, windy, chilly. Some serious weather with trees down and roads blocked. Shortly after our long weekend there, the mountain railway was put out of action and one fo the main roads also, due to a collapsed bridge. Both took weeks to restore.

The monsoon has started in Kerala already, I don't suppose it takes many days to get to the Nilgiris.

A little way down on the TN side, Coonor, was much nicer: not too wet, not too hot, not too cold. I think it would make a better base for exploring the area.

Hi Nasa,
Even I am on my first trip to Ooty in third week of June. What I have heard from friends is that it does rain late June but it is still nice weather to go around. Also, rains clean up the city.
So I am willing to take risk. Anyway, I am keeping Ooty as my base (because it has got loads of staying options) and then go places nearby - Coonoor, Kotagiri et al.
BTW I visited Port Blair in late Sept (monsoon all around) and I was lucky enough to get all my outing days - bright and sunny :-)

In the third week of June you will get the best discounts as its most definitely off season.
Nick is right - check for landslides, if you see the way some of the trees are precariously perched along the main road routes, you will understand why they topple in the first rains itself!
Once it rains, it will be chilly though that will be a pleasant change for people coming from the plains.
It does'nt necessarily rain non stop all the time, so you may have a few dry spells. It will be misty and lovely in this season, and that is a plus point in itself. Enjoy your visit.

Define "cold". I've been in India for less than a month and came from a place where it is not cold unless it is snowing.

(I shipped a feece and gore-tex jacket with my household goods with the Himalayas in mind, but I'm just as happy to use them in Ooty)

Is it only cold during the monsoon? How is the weather there after the monsoon ends?

In winter, Ooty is cold enough at nights for those of us from the sweaty coastal regions; night temperatures were around zero in Jan this year. During the daytime, you have the perfect combo of high altitude, low latitude, so the sun gets quite piercing as long as it is around. During the rains, it gets cool, 'chilly' for us, perhaps not for those who come from colder climes. I doubt it will go below 12-15C at night. The cold months [nights] are Dec to Feb. After the monsoons, it will be very pleasant.
