The best places to visit in Ooty are botanical garden and the lake .. apart from them I didn't find anything interesting. There is one dodabetta peak. and don't forget to go to nearby Cunoor, it has got some breathtaking views of the tea plantations.

ooty and kodaikanal will be quite crowded ( the town is fast becoming a dump), but still worth a visit. weather will be pleasant in summer, but that is why people flock to these hill stations. the ooty flowershow will be on ( dont know the exact duration ). acco rates are likely to be on the higher side.
i had passed thro ooty last november and found that most hotels run on off season tariffs which are 50% or lower. Summer is peak season. it is better if you have your own vehicle as there are quite a number of less known, but equally interesting places in and around ooty. and when in ooty, extend your visit to coonoor too. |

in ooty try to visit mukurti national park, portimund reservoir, upper bhavani dam, avalanche dam, glen morgan, pykara lake, doddabetta peak,...
in conoor try to visit the tiger hills cemetery and of course the usual dolphins nose and lambs rock...adderly estate in dolphin's nose rents out rooms in the estate bungalows if u want some shanti and chill in the tea estates... for renting cars try hawkes tours and travels in ooty or the other travel agencies...no clue bout the prices... the only problem is ooty and kodaikanal are gonna be crowded in april and may and the prices would be high for season... also u cud try redhills tea estate near avalanche in ooty to stay away from the hustle and bustle... |

George Hawkes in Charing Cross, Ooty, is the best company for hiring a car and driver.
You will pay Rs1500/- for a top-of-the-range A/C Toyota Qualis and driver for a day - including 80km of travelling. They have a wide range of cars, and the smallest is far cheaper. In March 2005 they charged me Rs3500/- for a new A/C Ambassador Car and driver for the eight-hour drive from Ooty to Cochin. They accept credit cards, and can be contacted on 0423 244 2756. |

Ooty:Firstly, go to Mettupalayam by train or bus and catch the Nilagiri Mountain Railway train. That itself is a reason to travel till Ooty. Apart from this, the other posts are quite informative. I would add a drive to Dodabetta Peak to their suggestions.
Kodaikanal: Coakers Walk, Kodai lake (heart oif Kodai), Bryant Park, dolphin's nose (also in Ooty) and Berijam lake (the last one needs a permission, but worth the trouble.) Stay close to the lake.Lot of hotels and equidistant to all the above places except Berijam lake. Another place is Bear Shola falls. Not much water save for a tiny stream during pre-monsoon. But it could be an enchanting walk to this point through a dense wood. I went on a morning walk to this place from my hotel with music playing in my ears....my best morning walks ever.

Hey Folks,
I am planning to travel to OOty and Kodai in March and need to know if there is a good method for 4 of us to get to Ooty form Coimbatore. I tried the Indian Railways but looks like the NIlgiri Toy Mountain Railway is closed. Also how does one get to Mettupalaya from Coimbatore? |

You have to go to GandhiPuram Bus stand for buses to Ooty. About 2 kms from coimbatore railway station.
Taxi is available at Rly.station itself and costs 1000 Rs. for dropping to ooty. |

Coimbatore to Ooty
For a family of 4 it makes more sense to hire a pvt taxi. I can recommend Mr Jagadeesan 9442370007, we go every year to the Nilgiris and always use his taxi ever since the first trip. He drives safely and knows the area very well, being from the Nilgiris district. He's shown us many off the beaten track places which we now much prefer, rather than Ooty / Coonoor. The Mountain railway is very much running as we went last in Jan. You can easily take a 1 hr ride between Ooty and Coonoor, the 1215 train ex Ooty is always light. For Mettupalayam from CJB again if you are 4 people, go in comfort in a cab.

You dont have to book tickets in advance. i think they dont have that option at all. this train is now operated between coonor and ooty not between Metupalayam and ooty
