I guess the 11cm of rain explains the rain line shutting down. Tamilnadu typically receives a good monsoon in October and November. Hopefully by mid-december things should be back on track for a good trip.

I grew up in Ooty and I can tell you that December is a fab time to go if you wrap up well. You get lovely clear days with nice sunshine. It tends to be cold though. But less chances of rain. I would say train trip uphill is the better option (if running). Lovely way to build up your expectations.
The town itself is crowded but if you go 1/2 km outside of town you get to beautiful hilly roads etc. If you have enough time visit places around Coonoor as well - Lamb's rock, Dolphin's Nose, if possible Kodanad view point from Kotagiri. From Ooty try to visit Pykara (on Mysore Road), Lovedale, Kundah, Avalanche and if you can get a permit Upper Bhavani (It is the most pristine lake I have seen in the Nilgiris), Kalhatty falls. On the Mysore road there are a number of places you can just stop and spend a few hours just enjoying the scenery or trekking a little etc. Some of them are called 6th, 8th and 10th Mile points. You can go to Glen Morgan where there is a winch (you can't ride it nowadays-only for TNEB staff) and also Sandynillah. There are plenty of places around Ooty where you can stay cut off from the crowds. Hope you have a great trip! ![]() |

If you have still more time, you can have a day trip with possiblity of a night stay to Mudumallai. They take you into the forest in Forest Dept buses and you can almost surely see elephants, Deer, Peacocks etc.

Mudumallai is a lovelely day trip, even if you don't see many animals.
Gives you the chance to warm up as well! After Ooty in July, there is no way I'd go there in December! . But I'm fond of my plains temperatures...

I agree with you Nick about temperatures. If you can go in summer, it has got to be the best time to go... flowers are in bloom at that time too. And if you are used to Chennai kind of weather, December in Ooty will be really cold.
