Northern Tamil Nadu Beaches
Can anyone recommend any beaches (with budget accommodation under 500 Rps per night) in Tamil Nadu – either above Chennai or between Chennai and Pondicherry, but not including Mammalpuram (I’ve been there) - any recommendations a bit off the tourist track much appreciated .
Thank you |

You can try Repos Beach part of Auroville about 8 km north of Pondy. They have beach huts available on a first come first serve basis and have a nice little cafe there. There are also smaller guest houses nearby.
The beach is decent, but I have to say that most beaches in Tamil Nadu are less than spectacular. The Bay of Bengal is rough in that area and people have been known to drown. It should be fine though for wading, just avoid swimming. Cheers!

Kovalam? ---that's the Kovalam to the South of Chennai, not the Kerala one. Called in there once, and found it a bit seedy, that that was just an impression of a quick visit while out on a drive.
Looks like it gets quite a lot of local tourism, though. Any of the beeches South of Elliot's Beech in Chennai will be quiet in the day, some will attract a few people in the early evening, but nothing like as busy as the city beeches. Here's my local beech, Palavakkam, in the mid-afternoon. Be warned, though, the less 'popular' beeches are 'working' beeches and are the homes/workplaces/hanging-out-places of the fishing community. Of course, the usual applies: most people are good people, but you do not want to find your self in the midst of a bunch of fishing guys with bottles of alcohol, especially if you are female.

There are one off places to stay.. but the "off the beaten path" is rare.there are too many tourits and too few paths for any new ones.
![]() if you are particular about beaches which are untouched by tourists - places outside of mahabalipuram - like near kalpakkam, or towards pondy. for 500 bucks - stay in chennai and go to the beach every morning! ![]()
