Hello,
I will be in Mamallapuram on January, Sunday 25th and it seems like I will be there at the time of the Dance Festival. Does anyone know about it? Is it worth having a look at it? Do I have to buy tickets in advance or is it free access? Thanks for your answers, |

Yes, it is definitely worth a visit. It is one of the major tourist-oriented cultural events in south India. General admission is free, but the seats closest to the stage cost Rs 100. You can buy tickets in advance, or show up and get one on the spot as long as there are seats available.

We passed by the event site when we were there in late Dec. It is a tiny venue, about 200 plastic chairs on a plot of land of the size that one might build a small house on. It is a well-known festival but apparently not particularly popular.

They get killed by the bulls, more often.
No, I do not think they set out to kill the bulls, but there is a lot of cruelty, and several attempts have been made to ban it. I do not believe it happens here in Chennai (Madras), but it happens in the Tamil Nadu villages. It takes place during the Pongal festival: that was a couple of weeks back. I think 4 people died this time. Mamallapuram Festival: yes, 25th is last day, I find. Schedule -->here |
