Mamallapuram & learning sculpting
Hi. I am planning trip to India. Year 2000 I was in Mamallapuram for some time and saw westerners working in local sculptors studios.
Is is still possible to go and learn with them? How much do they ask for tuition? Thanks in advance. |

Im not sure if you will find what you're looking for in the above site but I found it quite useful on my recent visit there. As you rightly observed, there are innumerable sculpture work shops on every street, in and around M'puram, maybe you can personally enquire when you get there. There is a Museum and School of Sculpture on E.Raja Street but this may be for a more formal course, although Im sure they will assist you. |

Very interesting proposal. Wasn't aware something like this would be possible, but it makes sense, why not.
Good luck and have fun with it if you succeed, do let us know what you found when you return.

What's the life expectancy of those workers? Having walked there, I suppose that stone mason's disease (silicosis) takes quite a heavy toll. Lots of grinding, fine dust everywhere, never a filter mask.

An idea for the less ambitious...:
My friend just walked up to one shop and asked whether she could make her own sculpture. She paid them a small amount for a piece of stone, and could use their tools. They taught her some tricks of the trade, and she managed to produce quite a nice ashtray. She just sat in the shop for about two hours a day, and had a nice time chatting with the guys. It will not make you a new Bernini (or the Mahabalipuram equivalent ), but it was a nice way to spend time in Mahabs. |

I was wondering same too when I was there Lugubert. Thanks for reminding. I think have to get masks and eyegoggles before I go there. For myself and some to give for sculptors there. I wonder if I can get them from Chennai?
Thanks for reply mirjamd. I am quite lazy, so few hours daily is enough for me too. I am going to try finish at least one small staue and some other items as well. |
