Mahabalipuram excursions
Hi,
I will be reaching Chennai early saturday morning, and need to take a bus/train to Thanjavur on saturday night. Two questions: First, will it take a whole day to see Mahabalipuram, and if not then what other sights are recommended ? Second, are there any sleeper buses from Chennai to Thanjavur? thanks! |

On Mahabalipuram, it will take about 5 hours or so for a slightly rushed trip, including travel time.

So, Chennai-Mahabalipuram-Chennai (including sightseeing) will take about 5 hours?

Yes, sightseeing in Mahabalipuram. Will be a little rushed, though

It is an hour journey each way, maybe more if you go when the traffic is bad

Factor in the weather conditions. Mahabalipuram during mid day can be very hot and you may not enjoy the sight seeing. If possible leave early in the morning and return by mid day.
A lot of private busses operate to Thanjavur but I am not sure of a sleeper coach but there are good super deluxe buses. If you have not reserved your tickets, it may be difficult to get a night bus. All buses /trains are running full even on weekdays. |

I will be reaching Chennai at 6.30 am.
So, do I have time to do something else (maybe Kovalam) as well before I head back to Chennai? Since I don't have a confirmed railway booking, I would need to take a bus (to Tanjore) from chennai. |

Seems to me its just a fishing village, but local tourists seem to go there.

I'll be arriving at Chennai Central station. Where do I go to get the bus to Mahabalipuram? Or is taxi the only way to go?
Sorry, this trip is totally out of the blue, and haven't had a chance to research things! |
