the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai now has security guards and everyone must go through a metal detector. All backpacks and purses are searched. It was not like that in 2006, the last time I was there.

The thoroughness and attentiveness of the guards will differ at each entrance. if you have any swiss army knives they will confiscate them if you want to bring them in...depending on the guard, of course.....

Thank you, YogaGal for the info on the guarded entrances of the Meenakshi Temple. Use to carry something like a Swiss knife with me all the time for fruit peeling and opening an occasional bottle of wine. One has already been confiscated once in Bangalore (my own stupidity of course). What a pity, btw, that guards and equipment seem necessary nowadays, I used to go in and out some seven eight years ago without meeting such precautions.

I was in Madurai in November, but the guards didn't find the small penknife I use to sharpen my drawing pencils! They just had a cursory glance in my backpack.

They did make me take my socks off, however! Unfortunately I have a medical problem with my feet that makes it very difficult, if not impossible to walk barefooted on anything other than soft carpet, sand or grass. So I usually wear three(!) pairs of thick hiking socks in temples. On this last visit no one minded, except in Madurai. I managed to shuffle, with the help of hubby, to where I could sit down and get out my sketchbook and paintbox, where I stayed for the next 90 mins while he investigated the rest of the temple xomplex.

Hi,

Tanjore is a nice place to visit. my personal favorite so far.
They have one of the oldest and finest temples in India, museums and people are friendly. Also the food is fine and tanjore is not as messy and busy as for example trichy or chennai.
Tanjore is smaller than trichy but you will find some good hotels.

hotel Sangam is nice and the restaurant is good when it is tourist season, but other restaurants are nearby or easy to reach by auto (the small yellow cabs) Also -Oriental towers- is quite good and cheaper than hotel sangam. They both have swimming pools, in summertime you might feel to jump in some water.

If you book a room at the spot it can be much cheaper then when booking trough a agent. If your a bit dare ask for the indian pricelist in INR, cause when you are a foreighner they will show you a different pricelist in us dollar(aprox. twice as expensive)

Have a nice trip and enjoy beautifull India
