Smile Madurai-Kodaikanal-Kumbhkonam Trip

Dear Sir/Friends,
I am Rahul Kulkarni from Pune. I am planning a trip to Tamilnadu in last week of Dec. I tried my best to get all information on net. But was unable to get the following information.
1) On 28th Dec, I plan to travel from Madurai to Kodaikanal. I plan to start approx. in the afternoon. Are good busses available from Madurai to Kodaikanal. Also give the timetable if possible.
2) On 30th Dec., I plan to travel from Kodaikanal to Kumbhkonam(40km from Thanjavur & 87km from Tiruchchirapally). I have the following options.
a) Travel to Kodaikanal road station(80km from kodaikanal) & travel by MV-TEN passenger to Kumbhkonam. But rail reservation facility is not available to this train.
b) Travel to Kodaikanal road station(80km from kodaikanal) & travel any train to Tiruchchirapally. From Tiruchchirapally travel by bus to Kumbhkonam.
As I am traveling with my parents, I do not want hip-hop & tiring journey. The option ‘c’ is more preferable.
c) Direct good bus from Kodaikanal to Kumbhkonam(7 hour journey). Please give me the details if this bus service exists. Or please suggest something.

Thanks & Regards,
Rahul Kulkarni

Hi Rahul, welcome to IndiaMike!

1) I went to Kodaikanal in May-June. At that time there were plenty of state buses from Madurai, but I distinctly remember that after 2PM there was a gap of a few hours during which there were no buses. Otherwise the buses were leaving every 45-60 mins. No idea about private bus service. I would recommend, catching a bus from Madurai as early as possible because the journey itself is pretty long. You don't want to reach Kodai after dark and search for a hotel.

2) I think option 'b' makes more sense, but then it's your preference. Avoid option 'a' because having had first-hand experience of unreserved passenger trains in Tamil Nadu (or anywhere for that matter), I won't recommend traveling that way, especially if your parents are old (I actually find it a fun way to travel, but only when alone). About Option 'c', I don't know if there is any direct bus. Hope someone else can provide more info.
