Hi Sindhbad,

For tirunelveli-madurai, if you reserve a bus, then probably you are in trouble! Just catch whichever is starting out Even trains take almost same time as the buses!

Around Tirunelveli, some people take the Nava Tirupati tour (may be 2 full days).

If you start at 10 am to MDU, then you may just see Meenakshi Temple and nothing more! Close to Meenakshi temple is Pudhu Mandapam, now a shopping complex, worth visiting. A trip to Alagarkoil (full day again) with a mini-trek to Nupura Gangai and Pazhamudhircholai is great.

Tirunelveli to Madurai

Normally it takes 3.5 hrs between Tirunelveli and Madurai. But with new roads now, it might just take 2.5 hrs to 3 hrs. I took a car last time and reached Nagercoil (after Tirunelveli) from Madurai in 3 hrs, which normally would take 5 hrs.
Enjoy the ride!
