I plan on spending 3-4 weeks in Tiruvannamalai this December and I'm wondering about the lodging situation there... price? availablity? recommendations?

I've emailed Bhagavan's ashram and they said i could only stay for 3 days... Would it be alright if I stayed nearby and spent time at the ashram before/after those three days?

Thanks,

Drew

You can stay near the ashram and visit as much as you wish; it is a place open to anyone without any restriction, that is, also tourists come just for sight-seeing.

A convenient place to stay is just one block before you come to the ashram from the town-side, at a place called Agni Lingam.

I have stayed there twice. Last year at this guest-house (for Rs 250 or so)
http://www.hillviewresidency.com/index.html

Before that at the house just in front of it, with a Kashmir store downstairs, they rent two or three rooms upstairs. Actually I liked it better there than in the guest-house next door.

Just a few steps from there is the local German Bakery with a nice open roof-top restaurant with great meals.

If you are coming early in December, the choice of guest-house will be yours. I don't think you have to make a reservation ahead. For Xmas time however, you should do it.

I have returned from the Ramana ashram, less than a week back. The place really has spiritual vibrations!
It is true that the ashram provides accommodation only for 3 days; however, there are plenty of hotels/lodges nearby, that cater to the tourists. Ashram is open for one and all, and whether you reside in the ashram or outside, you would have the same access, except for the meals.
Ashram provides meals for residing guests and other special invitees only.
Within one-mile distance from the ashram, there are close to ten hotels and lodges. As you are planning the trip in December, I would suggest that you make prior reservation.
Travel, before you run of the time!!!

Since I'm trying to visit during the deepam, the ashram is full!

I've emailed Hill View, but do you have the contact information for the other rooms?

Thanks!

If you are not arriving at a full-moon day, you won't have any problem getting a room. If you prefer to arrive with a reservation in hand, just get the 3 days at the ashram first. In July no problem, it is only problematic Dec-March. If at that point you do get a room at that Agni Lingam place, you can skip the ashram reservation, if not, you have 3 days time to look around. My stay there is now 6 years ago (I have visited after that, but not stayed there again), so things might have changed. I know that the guesthouse next door has become much mor expensive.

In case you go to that one, be sure you ask for a room away from the extremely loud street. I stayed here before going to the Agni Lingam place, because it is really unbearable there - and you pay for the room.
