Kodaikanal

Hi all,
I have planned honeymoon in Kodaikanal from 19-Jul to 25-Jul. I am going to stay in Carlton Hotel. I would like to know how to reach Kodaikanal from Madurai. How's weather in the month of July ? I know it's monosoon season but how bad rain will be ? How's Carlton hotel and food at Kodaikanal ?

Not sure which train you are taking to Madurai. You could get down at "Kodaikanal Road" Railway station which is the nearest for Kodaikanal. Please check whether your train stops there. There are buses from "Kodai Road" railway station /Or Cabs to the hills.

Or If you have decided to Visit Madurai followed by Kodaikanal, There are lot of Buses from Madurai Bus stand to Kodaikanal.

Carlton is one of the Costliest hotels & location is Excellent (just opposite to the Lake) & They have their own jetty in the lake and the only other option is Tamilnadu tourism's Jetty.

Food you will get all kinds and No issues.

Apart from the normal tourist places, try to Visit "Berijam Lake". The easiest way is to get a pacakage with any tour operator as getting the forest department pass as a Tourist is very difficult !.

Hope this helps !

We need to stand in the Queue in Forest Department Office, Kodaikanal from 6 am or earlier and the Counter opens around 8 am+ (Not sure as I visited 3 years back) and even at 6 you will see atleast 10 to 12 Travel Agents Standing in the queue.

And daily some quote is there and based on that they will issue pass and then close the counter and that's it!.

We tried unsuccessfully in that Queue and hence I would suggest Travel agent is better !

And I am not sure about Forest Department Bungalow as we Stayed in Hotel TTDC , Kodaikanal at that time !

Hope this helps

u need the DFO permission and need to be at his office and fil out a form before 9AM. if you can actually pull some strings and stay at the forest bungalow, it will be a stay of a lifetime in the most beautiful place in south india - berijam lake ! good luck !!

Last year when we enquired, the DFO said they have stopped giving permits for Berijam Lake. However, he did agree to let us visit Madhikattan Shola accompanied by a forest guard. Not sure what the situation is now.

You can visit Gundar Reservoir just beyond the Observatory. It is also pristine and unfrequented. There is a no entry Tamil signboard there but no one around to check.

I agree with Suresh.

You can also go upto Mannavanur, the route there is very scenic and pristine. There is a small lake at Mannavanur. From M/vannr there is a jeep track to Berijam. You can ask the locals about it if you are interested.
