While there last year we visited Matheran Hill station and would really love to go to another one next year....this time we have my partners children in tow aged 10 & 18, the elder not being used to the sun so thought a hill station may help her acclimatise, have been mooching around india mike and thought that Kodai sounds good, but can you help with how the weather will be, we will be arriving around the 13th Febuary, how cool is it on a night and is thee much rainfall around this time... Thanks Px

Kodaikanal in February
We were there in Feb 07. It was very, very cold at night but most hotels offer heaters or log fires. Day time in the sun is very pleasant, a thick long sleeved shirt should suffice but it is nippy in the shade. The sun can be quite intense because of the high altitude, low latitude combo. February is a good time to go because it is off season so there is no crowd at all unlike in summer when there are traffic jams. The air is very clean, crisp and fresh and you can walk miles and miles without feeling any fatigue. There are lots of beautiful walks in and around Kodai. You can also rent bicycles for a very cheap rate and go around, the roads are good unlike in a lot of other places. The hedgerows are filled with colourful little birds unique to the region, who are not at all shy and will willingly pose for photographs [from a reasonable distance of course!]. Do look out for the resident wild bison at the Pambar shola on the way to Vattakanal and Dolphins Nose. http://kodaikanal.org/ is an excellent site with useful links. You can go there by road from Madurai[shortest] or from Coimbatore via Palani, or even from Munnar via Bodi, Theni and Periyakulam. A lot of people prefer the Coimbatore route because of the better air connections to and from Coimbatore.
Tip: The lakeside is a particularly nice location. You will get huge off season discounts in February at all the pricier lakeside hotels. Let me know if you want more detailed information about Kodai. |
