kitesurfing
Greetings...I moved here over a yr ago and surf @ fisherman's cove and mahabalipuram. I am good friends with a kitesurfer who has no problem launching and landing @ city beaches here in Chennai. I know of one other guy who kites here @ fisherman's cove. You will have no problem launching as long as there is wind. Get in touch with me and I'll hook you up with his #. Cheers.

kitesurfing
you don't need to be a guest to access the the beach @ Ideal. You can pay for a day pass @ 200 INR. I would rec. staying @ one of the guest houses in mahabalipuram and kite @ the beach down there (approx. 4km south from Ideal Beach) A non-ac room my run you 500INR a night.

Thank you,
i need to already have a room to get my visa, the most easy was email paradise guest and i got one. it's only 5 amp fuses in most rooms, i think i need a room with better fuse, Ideal Beach may have, hope for a good price if i book for months, don't really know. i never need ac, a fan is moore quiet. 100% vegan i always make my own food, don't like kitchens, i prefere myself to keep my room clean with no chemicals. my food never leave any smell, no fat, i never fry things, and use cold water for cleaning. I like to do as in Mui Ne and Cabarete, i by a ricecooker and a teacooker, and maybe a new refridgerator, it keep bugs out. and i give it all away when i leave. Paradise Guest House... Triplicane?
Never been inside, but spoke to a recent visitor who did not like it and moved out. Don't worry, plenty of competitors in that area. Broad Lands is just a few doors away. |

I can imagine kitesurfing will be great on those windy east coach beaches. You will attract a healthy crowd of gawkers though! Be prepared for some major stare-age!
I have been to Mahabalipuram many times and mainly stayed at Ideal. It really is the nicest place to stay, but will be expensive if you are planning on staying long! They will not likely give you much discount for a long stay as they are often full anyhow, and so can easily fill your room at a higher rate. However, there is plenty of choice and a good long stretch of open beach for anyone to use that you do not need to pay for! Ideal is just a small part of this. It is already contentious that places like Ideal charge for the short stretch of beach in front of their resort, as the beach does not really belong to them. Its really the same all over India. The beaches are basically open land! In terms of kitesurfing, the rest of the beach is the same as what there is at ideal. Its just a bit dirtier than the beach which is outside Ideal... Thats all! I really would recommend for now that you just book in somewhere short term, and then when you turn up you can hunt around for a room you can rent for a longer term... which will better cater to your rather bizarre requirements of self-clean and self-cook using electricity. I can tell you that most hotels and guest houses anywhere in India will not want you to use an electrical appliance rated over 5A. The main problem is that compared to the west, electricity in India is ridiculously expensive when measuring it against the cost of living index. No offence to you but most foreigners just do not get this at all! If you are going to be running a fridge 24/7 and your electric cookers every day, your room owner may want you to pay a chunk of his electricity bill. |

Worried that i'm coming late, highseason. gonna look around all rooms close to Auroville soon, moore easy for me to get my food there. i need a room, to get rid of my 20 kg heavy kiteboardbag, for a chanse to look around for another room. really like the pictures on Mahabalaburam beach, but long way to Auroville from there (to by my bread) ![]() Last edited by Kjellorix : Nov 2nd, 2009 at 21:22. |

So I guess you have ditched the initial plan of going to Mahabalipuram? You seem to mention more of Auroville now! I know you know that these are two different places!
Looks like you may need to do a bit of thinking as to where you really want to be, and what you want to do. Is it that Auroville is the ideal choice, but you feel the lifestyle choice of being a die-hard kitesurfer with expensive gear is incompatible with the values of Auroville? If so, remember that there is more to Pondicherry than just Auroville! If the reason for being in Auroville it's just for getting the right supplies of your special food (if I understand correctly that's basically Rice, Tea, Bread... and some veg), then remember you can get all of this in Mahabalipuram too, or for that matter you could even be based anywhere in the Union territory of Pondicherry outside Auroville. |

i like Mahabalipuram, if it's not to mutch struggle to get real bread, and food there.
I'm not a Aurovillian-freak. I like to live and feel good about all of it. I think i'm not a Aurovillian (i don't fit in there), but it's close only 13km from... They never answer my email, or anything, about how to get a room there. i like to spend my money for kitesurfing. Or paragliding is something in mind too. I have'nt see a lot of Pondicherry, but i think the beach there are a little narrow, to stones and hard things. I feel i miss something maybe Mahabalipuram (it really loocks like) the perfect place for me. If sombody offer me to go basejump, with g-suit, i'm really happy to do that. |

When you mention "real" bread what do you mean? To many Europeans (especially Swedes, Germans, Swiss), "real" bread just does not exist at all in India. If you want something good, you will have to make your own! (My Mum used to bake our own wholemeal breads pretty much everyday when I was growing up in India)! Apart from that, if it's any help, there is a German bakery that I know of in Mahabalipuram. Indeed there is something called a "German Bakery" in pretty much every western tourist trap in India. The one in Mahabalipuram did actually make some fairly passable stuff! Have a look at this picture: http://www.ellaanne.com/gallery2/mai...Id=x 50ff0c5b Though I am sure it is vegetarian, I do not know if it is really "Vegan". I also have no idea what it is like these days. |

Real bread in Sweden is made only with natural things, all fullkorn and no animal fat.
They make it in Sweden, and i read about they make it in Auroville too. I don't see any, in that site. But i can travel to auroville to get it, need only to do it one or 2 times a week. But if i'm able to use my ricecooker, i never need any bread, i really prefer that. |
