Kanyakumari

Kanyakumari is at the southernmost tip of India, where the three oceans meet and the sun rises and sets on the same water. While it is a major tourist destination for Indians, it attracts only handfuls at a time of foreign visitors.

The glory of Kanyakumari is the Vivekananda Ashram. It rests on several hundred acres of private grounds. A fabulous place to take a lengthy personal retreat if your mantra is peace and quiet. Private rooms are available at very reasonable rates.

Transport to Kanyakumari couldn't be easier: overnight sleeper train from Chennai, and 30 rupees auto-rickshaw from the station.

First time I heard of Kanyakumari was when Dr Mohinder Suresh, the character from that lovely recent hit series on TV "Heroes" was scattering his father's ashes at Kanyakumari.

You can also take the second longest train ride in the world from Kanyakumari. I would love to visit soon!

Kanyakumari is lovely... have a walk through the fishermen's village... visit the Vivekananda museum... go by boat to the Vivekananda memorial island....and lots of other things to do. And watch the sunrise/sunset of course!!! Yes, it is a tourist place, but a very Indian one... you can meet people from all over the country.

And: you can walk from the railway station if you are not carrying heavy luggage...

Vivekananda Ashram

Could anyone possibly tell me if it possible to stay at the Vivekananda Ashram for a single night? I will be in Kanyakumari for one day and night next month and would love to stay there if it is possible. Also, how to I get to it? Thanks.

Dont fly to Trivandrum airport in Kerela and expect to drive the 95km easily. It took my taxi 3 hours, average speed 30 km/h both ways. Train seems better, but book early.

Thanks guys, I booked a week holiday in Kerala and they will drop us in Kanyakumari in the end we paid an extra Rs 2000.00 for that. I was planning to catch the train from Trivandrum then we decided to to ask our tour company to drop us in Kanyakumari becose its more convenience.
