Kanyakumari

Over 2000km on trains, boats, buses and horse carriages has brought me to Kanyakumari, and I can honestly say this place is a positive surprise! Somebody said it's a tourist place with not much to it. Ok, maybe there are stalls that sell all kinds of rubbish and so forth, but it's first and foremost a temple village. Besides, I think it's nice and small and quite peaceful, and there is something thrilling about the fact that you're walking on "Land's End" - the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent.

Not to mention the views and the sunrise/sunset. If anyone is in southern India and has the time to pass through, I recommend it. (You can get a double room with an ocean view for 250-350 Rs!)

What's the name of your hotel, Vasko? Kanyakumari is on my itinerary!

Stuff to do?

And are there lots of things to do during the day? How many days do you recommend? Any water sports or water activities that you can do?
Thanks

Hi jgogia,

There doesn't really seem to be a lot to DO in Kanyakumari, although it depends on what you mean by 'doing'. I didn't see anything related to watersports, but I'm sure the beaches a little way up the coast of Kerala (e.g. Varkala) have a lot more to offer on that front. (Maybe someone else can help out here.)

A couple of days (even one day) is enough to "see" Kanyakumari, it's a small place. I just liked the atmosphere, so I stayed a bit longer.

If you're nearby, in my opinion it's worth a visit.

I agree with Vasko, Kanyakumari IS a fascinating place! First, it's the actual tip of sub-continent (special place for me since I live on the actual southern tip of Europe...), and there's a nice temple with a beautiful mandapam in front and ghats where pilgrims take their holy dip, there's also an interesting Gandhi memorial, a good museum on Vivekananda life, and two small islands just in front of town, one of which has a huge, impressive statue (5 mts tall) of an ancient Tamil poet, and on the other one hosts another Vivekananda memorial building. Both can be visited, ferries leave from port every hour. And, last but not least, nearly NO western tourists there... totally different atmosphere from tourists traps like Kovalam etc.
And, no, it's not for water sports...
Wonderwomanusa, the hotel where you have the best view of the tip of continent and dawn on the three seas is called Hotel Samudra, on main street. Ask for a room on top floor, view is really impressive from there. It was around 350 Rs 3 years ago.

the knock on KK I've always heard is that it's noisy with screechy old-style bollywood blasters going till late in the evening. Are there quiet places to stay?
